HBO Wins Bidding War For J.J. Abrams New Sci-Fi Series 'Demimonde'

Hollywood Foreign Press Association Hosts Television Game Changers Panel Discussion - ArrivalsJ.J. Abrams' upcoming new series isn't TV — it's HBO.

The premium cable network won the bidding war over Abrams' sci-fi thriller "Demimonde," the first series he has created since 2008's "Fringe." Abrams wrote the script and will produce the show through his Bad Robot label.

HBO beat out the deep pockets of Apple, reportedly because Abrams was impressed with how it handled "Westworld" (which he executive-produces). He is also executive-producing the Jordan Peele-created anthology "Lovecraft Country" for HBO.

"Demimonde" centers on a family consisting of a scientist mother, her husband, and their daughter who all get into a terrible car accident. When mother is left in a coma, the daughter looks through her experiments in the basement and ends up transported to another world, one which is battling a monstrous force. Her father then follows her there. HBO describes it as "an epic and intimate sci-fi fantasy drama."

By adding "Demimonde," HBO is relying on a proven creator and producer as it looks to a future sans "Game of Thrones," which will air its final season in 2019.
