'Project Runway' Season 16 Will Make History (and Also Be 'Full of Drama')

Project Runway - Front Row - September 2016 - New York Fashion Week: The Shows"Project Runway" Season 16 will be breakthrough -- and not because a designer runs off the stage "for artistic integrity," although apparently that happens, too.

The "Project Runway" judges were just on "Good Morning America" to promote the start of Season 16 in August, and shared at least two reasons why the 2017 season will be a must-watch. For one (thanks probably to Tim Gunn, let's be honest), Season 16 will be the first season to include models of all sizes.

"It was about time," Nina Garcia told GMA. "You know, the perception of beauty really changes throughout the times. We went from like Twiggy to the supermodel to the waif. Now, happily, the industry is embracing body diversity and so are we. I'm very proud to be a part of a show that has full figured women, real women, designers designing for real body types."

So that's one reason to check out the new season -- size diversity, and how the designers handle it. Another reason is the trainwreck factor.

"I will say, this season is so full of drama, and it builds and builds and builds," Zac Posen said. "And we're just sitting there on our seats holding on." Heidi Klum added, "I mean, designers are running off the stage! I've never had this happen before. I'm like, 'Hey, why don't we all just take a break right now?'" Zac added that it was "for 'artistic integrity,'" making it clear he did not quite agree with the reasoning.

GMA also had past PR designers do a mini challenge right on the morning show:
"Project Runway" Season 16 premieres August 17 on Lifetime. Hopefully it will be heavy on the design talent and not just drama. But this is why "Project Runway: Junior" is becoming so popular -- it's not about egos and drama.
