The animated web series "Star Wars: Forces of Destiny" debuted today, with the first episode focused on Rey and set within the time frame of "The Force Awakens."
The eight-episode "Forces of Destiny" series highlights the female heroes of the "Star Wars" saga, from Rey to Jyn Erso to Princess Leia. Everything in the episodes is considered canon.
"Sands of Jakku" takes place sometime after Rey (voiced by Daisy Ridley) rescues droid BB-8 from scavengers. But another danger arises in the form of a sand monster that eats junk metal — and thinks BB-8 looks delicious. Then, Rey seems to use her Force intuition, without realizing it, to help BB-8 out of this jam.
The other webisodes will feature the voices of Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata, Tiya Sircar as Sabine Wren, Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano, and Vanessa Marshall as Hera Syndulla. Shelby Young will voice Princess Leia in place of the late Carrie Fisher, and an unknown actress will voice Padme Amidala in place of Natalie Portman.
Multiple heroines will interact with each other in some episodes, even though some are in different timelines.
A new short will debut every day at 1 p.m. ET leading up to a Disney Channel special on July 9.
