Director Danny Boyle, whose career was launched after the release of the movie in 1996, told Deadline that he's planning to make the sequel as his next film. He's currently promoting "Steve Jobs," starring Michael Fassbender, on the festival circuit.
"All the four main actors want to come back and do it," Boyle said. "Now it is only a matter of getting all their schedules together, which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series."
The four main actors are Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle, and Kevin McKidd, all of whom went on to have significant careers. Carlyle stars in "Once Upon a Time," while McKidd is in the cast of "Grey's Anatomy."
The original "Trainspotting" was the seminal, gritty tale of young heroin addicts living in Edinburgh, and based on author Irvine Welsh's novel of the same name. Screenwriter John Hodge will pen the follow-up script, as he did he original, and it will be based on Welsh's sequel, "Porno."
