Box Office: 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Tops $1 Billion Worldwide

LOS ANGELES, Dec 31 (Variety.com) - Lucasfilm's "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" has cleared the $1 billion milestone in worldwide grosses in less than three weeks.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" pulled in $120.4 million globally on the New Year's Eve weekend with $52.4 million at 4,232 domestic venues and $68 million internationally during the Friday-Sunday period.

"The Last Jedi" is now the eighth highest-grossing domestic movie of all time with $517.1 million -- only $15 million behind last year's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" in the seventh spot. On the worldwide chart, it's now 24th with $1.04 billion, edging Universal-Illumination's "Despicable Me 3." The tentpole's international total, currently at $523.2 million, will see a significant jolt when it opens on Jan. 5 in China, its final market.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" has also topped Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," which grossed $504 million in North America, for the top spot among 2017 releases domestically. It's the fourth 2017 title to go past $1 billion worldwide, along with "Beauty and the Beast" at $1.26 billion, "The Fate of the Furious" at $1.24 billion and "Despicable Me 3" at $1.03 billion.

"The Last Jedi" is also winning the domestic weekend box office crown for the third time with $52.4 million, edging Sony's "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," which took in $50.6 million at 3,765 locations for the Friday-Sunday. However, Sony's projection showed the "Jumanji" sequel grossing $16.5 million on New Year's Day on Monday -- well above Disney's forecast of $13.2 million for "The Last Jedi." Should those numbers hold, "Jumanji" would edge "Jedi" over the four-day period with $67 million, winning by $1.4 million.

"Jumanji" has been "The Last Jedi's" biggest competitor by far since it opened on Dec. 20. The action-comedy should wind up with an 11-day domestic total of $186.3 million by the end of Monday. The action-comedy, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, has a $90 million budget. It's also performed impressively in international markets with $107 million thr0ugh Dec. 28.

"Jedi" and "Jumanji" helped lift the entire domestic box office for 2017 to $11.12 billion, down 2.3% from last year's $11.38 billion and off slightly from 2015's $11.14 billion, according to comScore. The gap for 2017 had been more than 6% at the end of the worst summer in a decade but performances by "It," "Thor: Ragnarok," "Justice League," "Jedi" and "Jumanji" closed most of that margin.

"With another $11 billion plus year on the books, the industry looks ahead to awards season and a 2018 packed with blockbuster titles and a hope for a year slightly less volatile than 2017," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore. Universal's "Pitch Perfect 3" led the rest of weekend's domestic pack with a projected $22.7 million at 3,468 locations for Friday-Monday, lifting its 11-day total to $69.2 million. The comedy threequel, starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, took in $13.1 million this weekend from 34 international markets for a foreign total of $28.6 million.

Hugh Jackman's musical drama "The Greatest Showman" is finishing a close fourth with $20.3 million at 3,316 theaters forecasted for the four days. The Fox-Chernin Entertainment title showed the biggest gain in the top 10 movies from the Christmas Eve weekend with an impressive 73% surge. The domestic total should hit $53.8 million through Monday.

Fox's second weekend of "Ferdinand" -- the only film to open on the same weekend as "The Last Jedi" -- followed in fifth with $15.1 million at 3,337 North American venues, giving the animated comedy $57.3 million in 18 days. Disney-Pixar's seventh weekend of "Coco" finished sixth with a projected $8.8 million at 2,845 sites for a domestic total of $181.1 million and $539 million worldwide.

Sony's "All the Money in the World" and Focus Features' "Darkest Hour" were in a battle for seventh place at about $7.2 million for the four days. "All the Money" opened on Christmas Day as the final wide release of the year at 2,074 locations after director Ridley Scott excised Kevin Spacey's scenes and reshot them with Christopher Plummer as J. Paul Getty, following the early November sexual abuse allegations against Spacey. Its eight-day total will be around $14.4 million.

Awards contender "Darkest Hour," starring Gary Oldman as the 1940 version of Winston Churchill, expanded to 943 venues in its sixth weekend and will have taken in $19.8 million by the end of the weekend. Focus reported strong performance in Washington, D.C./Maryland, Phoenix, Boston, Salt Lake City, and Florida markets.

"'Darkest Hour' is taking America by storm," said distribution chief Lisa Bunnell. "We're seeing audiences coming out in big numbers. It's a movie they found inspiring over the holiday break and the word of mouth gives us a strong outlook for the upcoming weeks."

Matt Damon's comedy-drama "Downsizing" finished ninth with a projected $6 million at 2,664 sites for the four days for Paramount. The 11-day total for "Downsizing," which carries a $65 million budget and was directed by Alexander Payne, should come in around $18.5 million.

Warner Bros.-Alcon Entertainment's second weekend of R-rated comedy "Father Figures" rounded out the top 10 with a projected $5.5 million at 2,902 locations. The 11-day total for the Owen Wilson-Ed Helms vehicle, which has a $25 million price tag, should hit about $14 million.

'The Walking Dead' EP Defends Show After Season 8 Ratings Drop

"The Walking Dead" brand is still relevant, even if viewing habits are changing. That's the word from executive producer David Alpert, who founded Skybound Entertainment with TWD creator Robert Kirkman.

Alpert talked to Variety's "Remote Controlled" podcast about the sharp ratings drop that started last year after the huge ratings for the Season 7 premiere. That devastating episode led some viewers to stop watching -- at least "live" Sunday nights -- and the same-day numbers (and 18-49 demo ratings) have slowly and steadily dropped ever since. The silver lining is that "The Walking Dead" remains the most-watched TV show -- and highest-rated in the advertiser-loving 18-49 demo -- on Sunday nights, even if it can no longer compete with its own glory days.

Alpert defended the show to Variety by arguing that many people are still watching, they're just delaying their viewing until later in the week, or even in later months, or later years:

"I don't think in any way the brand has lost its relevance in general. I think we're just seeing a decline in urgency across all media to consume something at a specific time. [...]

I think overall we're seeing increased competition, not just from television and not just from streaming services, but you get content everywhere. The idea that people watch things super live, that need to view on the same night and we're measuring ratings like a live rating, I feel like it's a little be anachronistic to be like, 'Oh, you're not holding the same ratings that you were.' [...]

I still get people coming up to me at conventions talking about, they're in the middle of Season 6. They can't believe what's going on. I still get people coming up to me like, 'You killed Beth? You killed Beth? What's the matter with you?' And I'm like, 'Are you in Season 5?' and they're like, 'Yeah, I'm in Season 5!'"

It's hard to gauge how many people are still getting caught up from the beginning. But advertisers do tend to care about who is watching on the same night versus later on, so AMC probably cares, too. It may be an outdated way of judging viewership, but since the Nielsen numbers still have tremendous power, the TWD ratings drop does matter.

AMC's 'The Walking Dead' Season 6 Fan Premiere Event At Madison Square Garden 2015 - ArrivalsAccording to Variety's previous reports, "The Walking Dead" Season 8's recent midseason finale failed to provide a major boost in the Nielsen Live+Same Day ratings. That episode averaged a 3.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 7.9 million viewers, the lowest-rated midseason finale since Season 2's 3.5 and 6.6 million viewers. The first half of Season 8 averaged a 3.9 rating and 8.7 million viewers per episode, compared to Season 7's 5.7 demo average by the halfway point, along with 12.1 million overall viewers:

"This is the latest in a string of bad ratings news for the megahit AMC series this season. The Season 8 premiere was the show's lowest-rated since its third season, despite the fact that the Season 8 opener was also the show's 100th episode. This season has also seen the show consistently put up numbers it has not experienced since its first few seasons."

However, since the midseason finale had a major shocking twist, it stands to reason that many viewers -- even some who just read about the twist and didn't watch the episode -- will be tuning in to see what happens next.

Season 8 returns Sunday, Feb. 25 at 9 p.m. on AMC.

Netflix's 'Black Mirror' Happy New Year Video Is Eerily Perfect

Smart. Scary. Overwhelming. Dystopian digital sensory overload. That's "Black Mirror" in a nutshell. It's also a decent description of the new "Black Mirror: Happy New Year" video Netflix just posted on the same day Season 4 debuted:

"There's only one way to say goodbye to 2017. Six new Black Mirror stories, now streaming."

"Black Mirror" fans quickly devoured the episodes, and all of the meaning in the Happy New Year video (which was set to an ABBA song, because of course). Here are some of the video reaction comments:

"The funny thing is that at some point you can't really tell real 2017 footage from black mirror dystopia!"

"Black Mirror saying 'I told you so'. Love it."

"The real Youtube Rewind we've all been waiting for"

"Oh I get it. Real life is black mirror."

"shout out to the best and most underrated netflix show ever."

"why am i so depressed watching a new year ad?"

"For everyone that doesn't know what "Black Mirror" means... look at your phone or TV screen (it's a black mirror)"

"black mirror, thank you for existing"

On Friday, Dec. 29, #BlackMirror4 trended on Twitter, with fans discussing the six new episodes as they watched them. There's always a lot to digest, but it's best to watch the episodes with no spoilers ahead of time, and only join the discussion afterward ... unless you decide to do it differently. There's no one correct way to let Charlie Brooker eff with your mind!

'The Last Jedi' Will Hit $1 Billion by 2018 as New 'Star Wars' Films Pass $4 Billion

'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' - PhotocallHappy new year indeed!

As of Friday, December 29, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" has made $934,298,228 at the worldwide box office. It will pass the $1 billion milestone over New Year's weekend, ushering in 2018 in lucrative style.

Also as of today, the modern "Star Wars" films -- "The Force Awakens," "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," and "The Last Jedi" -- have made more than $4.05 billion at the box office. That may sound like an arbitrary marker to celebrate, but Disney paid $4.05 billion for Lucasfilm in 2012; so, since Episode VII came out in 2015, the franchise has already paid for itself. (Granted, that doesn't include production and marketing costs.)

As Entertainment Weekly reported, Episode VII, "The Force Awakens," earned $2.07 billion worldwide, and "Rogue One" made $1.06 billion, on top of Episode VIII's ongoing take. Next up is "Solo: A Star Wars Story," scheduled to open May 25th, 2018, then "Star Wars: Episode IX" (still waiting for an official title) on December 20th, 2019.

Cole Sprouse Gave Twin Dylan a Bizarre Christmas Gift & Fans Have Questions

Nintendo Hosts Celebrities At 2017 E3 Gaming ConventionThe main question isn't about the gift itself -- even though the gift is a giant penis poster.

Before Cole Sprouse became Jughead Jones on "Riverdale," he and Dylan Sprouse, both 25, rose to fame on the Disney Channel's "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody."

The twins now have millions of fans, but they are first and foremost bros, and bros are pretty much required to poke fun at each other and tell dirty jokes. Cole managed both in one Christmas gift.

Here's what Cole posted, and Dylan retweeted:

Well, what else do you get the guy who has everything? But seriously, where did Cole even get a "huge poster of a bisected penis"?
Fans had an even more basic question in mind after reading the convo:
Some fans answered for him:

After so many years, fans do feel like they know the brothers.

By the way, if you've been wondering what Dylan has been up to while Cole is on "Riverdale," he's still acting, just in smaller projects -- including the Italian neorealist-style short film, "Carte Blanche"; the VOD thriller "Dismissed" (watch a scene from the movie here); and the indie comedy "Banana Split"; as well as acting in the Brooklyn theater production "The Illuminati Ball."

Here's what Dylan told Vulture:

"I think Cole's in a place where he's very happy right now, whereas I would be happiest doing more films with a lower budget — independent, expressive, really small-scale. I tend to enjoy roles that I very closely identify with: fringe people and complicated characters, who might even be bad guys, or bad characters that have one redeeming quality. That's closer to my idea of what my acting trajectory should be."

Good for him. Meanwhile, Cole and "Riverdale" Season 2 will return to The CW starting January 17.

Did 'The Bachelor' Arie Post a Spoiler Confirming Who Won?

Umm. Oops? Or is this a false trail?

"The Bachelor" Season 22 starts this Monday night, New Year's Day 2018, on ABC. "The Bachelorette" Season 12 alum Arie Luyendyk, Jr. is the rosemaster this year, and Reality Steve already posted spoilers on who Arie picks. And it looks like Arie and his current fiancée may have confirmed that spoiler by posting photos from the same location.

*******

*******

SPOILERS AHEAD

*******

*******

*******

*******

According to Steve, Arie is engaged to Becca Kufrin.

As possible proof, here's what Arie posted on Instagram:

The same day, Steve reports, Becca K. posted this on her own Instagram:

Same location. That's supposedly one of the "safe houses" where the final couple secretly meets between the end of filming and the end of the show airing in March. Both photos were deleted within hours of being posted. A spoiler oops or not?

As more "evidence," one of Arie's friends posted a photo on her Instagram, showing Arie and -- to the right -- what is supposedly Becca:

That photo was later deleted, too. Time will tell if those spoilers pan out.

By the way, you can read the full final four rundown here. The 2018 Bachelorette will probably be chosen from among that group.

Steve also posted spoilers for the Jan. 1 premiere, including who got the first impression rose and who goes home:

  • First impression rose: Single mom Chelsea Roy from Portland, Maine
  • Going home: Olivia Goethals, Bri Amaranthus, Ali Harrington, Brittane Johnson, Amber Wilkerson, Jessica Carroll, Nysha Norris, and Lauren Jarreau.

"The Bachelor" 2018 airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Two New 'Fantastic Beasts' Photos Show Off Jude Law & Johnny Depp

The "passionate, mischievous" young Dumbledore looks good so far.

Jude Law is stepping into the iconic Harry Potter role in "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald," the second of five planned films in Newt Scamander's (Eddie Redmayne) "Fantastic Beasts" series.

A full cast photo was previously released -- that's it above -- including Jude Law as young(er) Professor Albus Dumbledore, along with Johnny Depp as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald.

USA Today recently shared two new photos, not of the old friends-turned-rivals together, but of both gents with their respective allies.

Here's Grindelwald with one of his followers, Rosier (Poppy Corby-Tuech):

And here's Dumbledore, apparently at Hogwarts:

As director David Yates explained to USA Today, this second film shows Dumbledore as a rebel professor who "refuses to conform to the status quo" and is "passionate, mischievous and an inspiration" to his young students: "Dumbledore sees Newt as a kindred spirit, an outsider, who is misunderstood. They recognize each other's strengths and vulnerabilities."

Newt and Albus will have to work together to face Grindelwald, "a charismatic figure who uses his undeniable appeal to inspire others to blindly follow his cause." Yates further explained that his plan involves "suppressing all non-magical beings, whom he views as inferior to wizards."

"Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" -- costarring Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoe Kravitz, Claudia Kim, and Callum Turner -- opens November 16, 2018.

Meghan Markle Was Reportedly Shortlisted to Be a Bond Girl in Bond 25

Members Of The Royal Family Attend St Mary Magdalene Church In SandringhamPrince Harry or James Bond: Which one would you pick?

According to a report from The Sun (via Page Six), Bond producers had eyed "Suits" alum Meghan Markle to play 007's love interest in Daniel Craig's final Bond film. They say the 36-year-old future royal was on "the shortlist" to play the next Bond girl, along with "Baywatch" star Ilfenesh Hadera, 32.

A source said Meghan fit the role of a Bond girl perfectly, since "She's glamorous and sexy and a good actress" and "the brief was to find a glamorous rising star, specifically someone American or Canadian."

"Producers had narrowed down her and four other actresses on a shortlist last year with 'Bond 25' in mind. But the minute her relationship to Harry came to light they assumed she was out of the running so it soon became a list of four. [...] Her engagement effectively spelt an end to her acting career too so that was the final blow."

GERMANY-CINEMA-BOND-SPECTREThey didn't reveal who else was on the list of four, but it's a shame that just marrying Prince Harry would end her acting career. It makes sense that Meghan wouldn't want to fly back and forth from the U.K. to Toronto to tape "Suits," but a Bond movie role probably wouldn't take too long and they could shoot it in the U.K. or Europe.

Harry has shown he's willing to be a little risqué as The Spare Heir, and not your typical royal, so why can't she be an atypical royal too and continue her career? Apparently she's OK with leaving her old life, though, saying in her first post-engagement interview, "I don't see it as giving anything up. I just see it as a change."

We only recently got Daniel Craig to go on the record confirming the existence of Bond 25 as his final film. More details -- including an actual title and new costars -- will be revealed later.

First 'Bumblebee' Photo With Hailee Steinfeld Teases Retro 'Transformers' Spinoff

The "Transformers" franchise is traveling back to the 1980s, just with a Volkswagen Beetle instead of a DeLorean.

"Bumblebee," heading to theaters a year from now, is the first film in the live-action franchise to not be directed by Michael Bay. Instead, Travis Knight ("Kubo And The Two Strings") is heading behind the wheel, so to speak, for a spinoff focused on our Autobot hero.

Here's the synopsis from Paramount:

"On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug."

Empire shared a new photo showing Charlie and Bumblebee:Yep, he's back to being a bug -- like the old cartoons -- as opposed to the Chevy Camaro of the films.

Travis Knight told Empire how he wants to distinguish his film from the others by Michael Bay:

"I wanted to approach this massive, expansive franchise and really focus in on a tiny corner of the canvas. Everything I've tried to do at Laika [animation studio] -- searching for an artful blend of darkness and light, intensity and warmth, humor and heart -- I wanted to bring to the Transformers franchise."

The rest of the cast includes John Cena, Pamela Aldon, Stephen Schenider, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Drucker, Kenneth Choi, Ricardo Hoyos, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, and Grace Dzienny.

"Bumblebee" is scheduled for release on December 21, 2018, which will pit it against DC's "Aquaman."

New 'Avengers: Infinity War' Photo Shows Guardians of the Galaxy Helping Thor

Disney's D23 EXPO 2017Also, Robert Downey Jr. reveals he sometimes just wants to smell Chris Evans.

"Avengers: Infinity War" is gonna be one big Marvel superhero mixer. The first trailer came out in November, and ended with a rough-looking Thor (Chris Hemsworth) running into the Guardians of the Galaxy. "Who the hell are you guys?"

This new photo, from USA Today, focuses on that new team up, with Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) trying to help Thor:

As USA Today noted, "Avengers 3" will include more new pairings, including Science Guys Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) fighting alongside the Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) team.

Downey told USA Today his 5-year-old son watches the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" opening sequence on a loop, so "now I get to tell him that I know those guys. Maybe I can even introduce him to a raccoon one day, if he's lucky." Yes, introduce him to the foul-mouthed fictional raccoon!

RDJ also previewed his next confrontation with Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans), after their big fight in "Captain America: Civil War":

"That's the hardest for me, because I look at Evans and I just to want to go over and smell him or tell him he looks cool in those sunglasses when he's walking over to have lunch. And then I'm just staring daggers at him, getting mad. But even that relationship is going to take a turn."

Yes, a turn. So much change is ahead in the MCU. First up is "Black Panther," opening February 16. "Infinity War" will follow on May 4.

'Blade Runner 2049': Denis Villeneuve Doesn't Want to Release a Director's Cut

Even if the "Blade Runner 2049" box office numbers had been as strong as Warner Bros. hoped, Denis Villenueve would not be pushing for a director's cut of the film.

The director chatted with ScreenCrush about the possibility and stated that he thinks "best incarnation of the movie is what is in the theater." The subject came up in the wake of editor Joe Walker telling Provideo Coalition that the first assembly of "Blade Runner 2049" clocked in at almost 4 hours long, leading him to split it into two parts for "[his] bladder's sake."

Although Walker felt the break worked well, Villeneuve made it clear he felt four hours for the film would have been "self-indulgent"; editing had to be done.

"I will say that there's no great things that are being lost," he said. "When I cut something, it's dead. It means it was not good enough."

The director took it further, saying that cut scenes should stay that way and that he generally dislikes extended cuts. He added that there are only a few cases in which that has not been true; he preferred the director's cut of Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" to the original, and "Touch of Evil" was another exception.

We'd be surprised to see Villeneuve walk back his comments and agree to a director's cut. He has been candid about the film's lackluster reception at the U.S. box office and described it as "long" when discussing the reasoning. Adding more to it hardly seems like a solution, particularly given his thoughts on extended cuts.

'American Crime Story' Season 2 First Look Explores a Sensational Murder

It's time to bone up on "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story."

The second season of the true crime anthology series is diving into a new murder and public frenzy. As the title indicates, the focus this time around is on the 1997 murder of the famed Italian fashion designer. If you don't remember the impact it had on the country, FX Networks released a first look on Thursday that explores just that.

In the video, interviews with cast members Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez, Darren Criss, and Ricky Martin, as well as executive producers Brad Simpson and Nina Jacobson, are interwoven with scenes from the series. Together, they show how the death of Versace (Ramirez) came about and how it captured national attention.

"For every season of 'American Crime Story,' what we're interested in is what makes this an American crime, a crime America is guilty of, not just the characters we're exploring," Jacobson tells viewers.

Watch the first look video below.

"The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story" premieres Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.

'Game of Thrones' Star Maisie Williams and Boyfriend Got the Best Trivial Pursuit Question

'Grey's Anatomy' Co-Showrunner Talks Meredith's Love Prospects Post-Riggs

ABC's 'Grey's Anatomy' - Season FourteenThe past 13-and-a-half seasons of "Grey's Anatomy" have brought a lot of heartbreak for Ellen Pompeo's character, so it's understandable that fans would want to know if there is greener grass ahead.

January is going to bring the second half of Season 14, including Meredith Grey moving forward after her split from now-former co-worker Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson). However, what exactly that entails, according to Krista Vernoff, "remains to be seen." The showrunner, who shares the job with "Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rimes, offered up some insight to EW on Meredith's romantic future. She kept it vague, telling the publication that "love is a possibility" but not Meredith's main focus.

"What is next for Meredith in terms of a love life remains to be seen," Vernoff said. "I believe that romance and love are always a possibility, especially after we've lost the loves of our life. We have to evolve out of our immediate grief."

While it was a blow to lose Riggs, Meredith has been dealing with grief stemming from the death of her husband, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). Her relationship with Riggs "served a beautiful purpose," as Vernoff says, in that it helped Meredith "open her heart again." Now she's in a better place, single or not.

With that open heart, Meredith could, of course, fall in love again eventually -- and frankly, we'd be surprised if she didn't, In the meantime, though, she has plenty to keep her busy at Grey Sloan.

"Grey's Anatomy" returns Thursday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

Ryan Reynolds Had an Awkward Conversation About Santa With His Daughter

'Doctor Who' Vet Peter Capaldi Wrote 9-Year-Old Fan a Letter on Why Regenerating Is Good

Comic-Con International 2017 - Doctor Who: BBC America Official PanelA 9-year-old "Doctor Who" fan got a special Christmas gift from the exiting Doctor: a letter reassuring him that regenerating is good for the show.

With lead actor Peter Capaldi leaving the hit sci-fi series, he handed over the reins to the 13th Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) in the Christmas special. While the transition wasn't met with enthusiasm in the case of at least one young fan, the 9-year-old boy in question was lucky enough to get some kind words from Capaldi. The actor sent him a handwritten letter, which the boy's father, Brian McGilloway, posted on Twitter Wednesday.

Capaldi was the young fan's favorite Doctor, so he had been "dreading his regeneration," according to his dad. In the letter, the actor acknowledged that "regenerating is not completely good fun" but promised his young fan that it is always good for the show. He wrote:

Dear David,

I hope you are having a very merry Xmas. Xmas is always good fun. Well not always. Not every single second. Regenerating is not completely good fun. And it usually happens about Xmas-time. But you know what? Even though it can be a little bit icky (like really bad flu) it has always, always turned out good for Dr. Who. The new Doctor always becomes your favourite and the one that goes ... well, he never really goes, he is always there, somewhere in time and space, and if you think about him hard enough you'll see him, and he'll see you.

It's like the Doctor says, "Everything ends, and it's always sad. But everything begins again, and that's always happy. Be happy."

So, have a brilliant Xmas, a happy new year and a wonderful life -- I'm sure you will.

All the best,

Peter Capadli

Doctor ?

Capaldi himself became the Doctor during a Christmas special back in 2013, and not only did the show survive that regeneration, it had done so numerous times before then. Whittaker's debut is just another new beginning -- but the first for a female Doctor.

"Doctor Who" returns in fall 2018.

John Boyega's Tweet Praising 'Bright' Gets Him Dragged Into 'The Last Jedi' Debate

'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' - PhotocallNo good tweet goes unpunished!

John Boyega plays Finn in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," which just came out on December 15 and is still hotly debated across the galaxy. So it's understandable that when he tweets something, it's received in the context of "The Last Jedi." Plus, people are always projecting their own perspectives onto everything -- we all do it -- leading fans to sometimes make faulty assumptions.

Case in point: This tweet from John Boyega:

Taken on its own, many fans seemed to think it was commentary on the commentary about "The Last Jedi." Critics, in general, praised the film, while a vocal group of "Star Wars" fans have been very critical.

However, that tweet was actually meant to be paired with the one Boyega had shared just before it:

"Bright" -- Netflix's new movie directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith -- is in the opposite boat of "The Last Jedi." Critics panned "Bright" while the audience reviews have been positive.

But not everyone liked "Bright," just like not everyone liked/disliked "The Last Jedi." We are not the Borg, linked to the same hive mind. (Yes, that was a "Star Trek" analogy, sue me.) After Boyega tweeted praise of "Bright," he got some negative comments, like one person saying he was "cancelled."

Boyega made it clear that his "people like things you don't" comment was actually about "Bright" in response to a fan who was trying to be supportive, but assumed Boyega was talking about "The Last Jedi" criticism:

A lot of readers had the same misinterpretation, but some fans just appreciated Boyega's point on different opinions. Here's one response he replied to: "Bright" is now on Netflix. "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" has made more than $840 million at the worldwide box office to date.

John Mayer Explains Theory That 'The Accountant' Is a Batman Origin Story

He might be onto something. Stay with him here.

John Mayer is not the first person to tie the 2016 movie "The Accountant" to the DCEU's Batman movies. The first would probably be Ben Affleck, since he stars in both sets of Warner Bros. films. But there are deeper levels, and the singer decided to go down that rabbit hole after Christmas.

Before getting into John Mayer's theory, a SPOILER ALERT is due if you haven't seen "The Accountant":

What do you think? Is he Bat-sh*t crazy? Fans don't think so...

Seth Lee, who plays the younger version of Ben Affleck's character in "The Accountant," added his two cents:

Nice. The debate may continue -- on both "The Accountant" as a Batman movie and "Die Hard" as a Christmas movie -- but at least fans have been given some points to ponder into 2018. And since a sequel to "The Accountant" is reportedly in the works, we can cross our fingers for some kind of Bat signal linking the two universes.

Forbes: Jeremy Renner Was Hollywood's Best Actor for the Buck in 2017

FRANCE-CANNES-FILM-FESTIVALThe most underrated Avenger is worth every penny.

This is the final week of 2017, and that means the Internet is jam-packed with year-end lists. Forbes has been doling out data on things like the top-grossing actors of 2017 (here's that list), and now a list of the actors who give the biggest bangs for the bucks. That may sound dirty, but it just means a good investment. (As in, not like Johnny Depp.)

Here's how Forbes phrased their praise for Jeremy Renner's bankability:

"Studios looking for a bargain ought to consider Jeremy Renner: His movies returned an average $93.80 at the box office for every $1 he was paid, making him this year's best actor for the buck.

With roles in grand franchises including Marvel's Captain America movies and Mission: Impossible, Renner has proven himself to be a sound investment who offers reliable box office results. With a more modest quote than some of his counterparts he regularly pulls off hits: His co-starring turn in 2016's Oscar-nominated sci-fi Arrival grossed an impressive $203.4 million on a $47 million budget."

You know his agent just sent Forbes a huge bouquet.

Here's the list for 2017:

5. Chris Pratt, returns $34.40 for every $1 paid
4. Amy Adams, $46.10
3. Scarlett Johansson, $66.50
2. Emma Watson, $77.70
1. Jeremy Renner, $93.80

Very interesting. Three Marvel stars. Two "Arrival" stars. One DC star. And a "Beauty."

Last year's Best Actor for the Buck was Captain America himself, Chris Evans, who returned an average of $135.80 for every $1 he was paid. Huge return on the investment.

And now for the methodology. Forbes said they tallied their 2017 ranking by looking at the last three films each actor starred in prior to June 1, 2017, leaving out animated films, movies in which the actor had a small role, or movies that were shown on fewer than 2,000 screens. Movies released after June 1, 2017, were not considered.

Several of the stars named above will next be seen in "Avengers: Infinity War," opening May 4.

'Game of Thrones' Star Rory McCann Hasn't Watched the Entire Show: 'I'm Way Lost'

It turns out it is possible to watch only part of "Game of Thrones" without getting hooked -- and one of the show's stars, of all people, is proof.

Rory McCann has starred in the acclaimed HBO series as Sandor Clegane (aka the Hound) since Season 1, with the exception of Season 5, but he still hasn't felt compelled to watch the show all the way through yet. He recently revealed to SFX magazine (via its sister publication GamesRadar+) that he's "way lost" -- to the point that he has met fellow "Game of Thrones" stars without realizing they appeared in the same show.

"I haven't actually watched all of it," he said. "I'm way lost! I've met actors in 'Game of Thrones' and have no idea who they are, and apparently they've been there for years."

It's hard for us to fathom only watching some of the series, but at least McCann said that he intends to get through it all eventually and just hasn't "got round to it" yet. That said, we found it ironic that his co-star Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth) told SFX that "there's not a person on the show that isn't a fan of the show." McCann's level of fandom seems pretty weak, but it's hard to complain given how much his character has added over the years.

The actor also reminded us that we can't trust the show's cast members to be honest when they talk about what lies ahead in Season 8. McCann shared how he had to hide the fact that the Hound wasn't dead when he looked likely to be at the end of Season 4.

"I had to do a couple of Comic-Cons where I was out of the show, and I was just lying, lying, lying," he said.

It's still hard to believe that he's not lying about having not caught up on all the episodes, but at least his character is still alive. Once Season 8 wraps up the series, he'll have plenty of time to watch "Game of Thrones" and relive its glory days.

The final season is expected to premiere in 2019.

'Paddington 2' Trailer: The Adorable Bear Ends up in Jail

There's another adventure ahead for Paddington Bear, and it takes him places you wouldn't expect to find the little creature.

Warner Bros. Pictures released a new "Paddington 2" trailer Wednesday that previews the beloved bear's latest big-screen venture. In the sequel, Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) again ends up in a huge amount of trouble. Although all he wants to do is buy a pop-up book for his aunt Lucy, he is thrown behind bars when the book is stolen and he is thought to be responsible. Yes, Paddington is forced to swap out his iconic blue coat and red hat for a striped jumpsuit.

Fortunately, the bear does better in jail than you'd expect. He joins forces with other inmates, as you'll see below.

"Paddington" hit U.S. theaters in 2015 and made more than $268 million in theaters worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo data. The sequel looks to recreate that success with returning stars Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, and Julie Walters. Newcomers include Hugh Grant, Brendan Gleeson, and Peter Capaldi.

"Paddington 2" opens Jan. 12.

Chrissy Teigen Live-Tweets 8-Hour LAX-LAX 'Flight to Nowhere'

#REVOLVEawards - ArrivalsTravel around the holidays is always harder, but Chrissy Teigen and husband John Legend had a particularly brutal experience on Tuesday. Fans got to hear all about it, because the model-slash-TV personality live-tweeted their misadventure.

It all started on Dec. 26, when Teigen and Legend boarded an All Nippon Airways flight to Tokyo from Los Angeles. At first, the "Lip Sync Battle" co-host was silent on Twitter, but several hours into the flight, she shared that their trip was off to a pretty horrible start. Namely, they were turning and going back to LAX after having already flown for four hours.

"A flying first for me: 4 hours into an 11 hour flight and we are turning around because we have a passenger who isn't supposed to be on this plane," she wrote. "Why...why do we all gotta go back, I do not know."

Teigen's followers had questions, too, but the model admitted she had "no answers." All she knew was that the person had somehow boarded the flight with a United ticket, leading her to joke that boarding pass scanners must actually "a beedoop machine that makes beedoop noises that register to nowhere."

The trouble didn't end back on the ground, though. After reaching LAX eight hours and 20 minutes after leaving, Teigen said police started interviewing people seated around "the mystery person."

Hours and hours after their original departure, Teigen and Legend eventually made it to Tokyo, landing on Legend's birthday. Unfortunately, the mystery of why they had to go back to drop off the person with the United ticket remained a mystery to Teigen. She did, however, have nice things to say about the airline's employees.

We can empathize with anyone who has to fly eight hours to get nowhere -- especially someone who is pregnant and has to then get on an 11-hour flight -- but let's be honest, at least Teigen can afford to fly so in first class.

FX Order's Ryan Murphy's History-Making LGBTQ Drama 'Pose'

POSE -- Indya Moore as Angel competes in the 1987 ballroom category ROYALTY REALNESS in a scene from the pilot of POSE. Ballroom legends and survivors served as consultants for this and other scenes. CR: JoJo Whilden/FXFX wants to strike a "Pose."

The cable network has ordered Ryan Murphy's new dance musical drama, which is set in 1980s New York. "Pose" will feature the largest cast of transgender series regulars ever, as well as the largest LGBTQ cast of recurring cast members ever.

The show focuses on the collision between various levels of society, from Trump-era wealthy elites to downtown literati to ballroom dancers.

Frequent Murphy collaborator Evan Peters stars, along with Kate Mara and James Van Der Beek. The latter plays a financial kingpin, while the other two are a New Jersey couple who get sucked into the glamour and intrigue of city life.

"Orphan Black" star Tatiana Maslany was attached to the project, but her role will be recast.

Transgender actors in series regular roles include MJ Rodriguez, Indya Moore (pictured above as Angel), Dominique Jackson, Hailie Sahar and Angelica Ross.

"I am thrilled to join forces with John Landgraf and FX Networks and FXP and Dana Walden, Gary Newman and Fox 21 Television Studios to present what I think is a game-changer of a show, which at its heart is an uplifting series about the universal quest for identity, family and respect," Murphy said in a statement.

"Along with being a dance musical and an affirming look at American life in the 1980s, I'm so proud that 'Pose' and FX has made history right from the beginning by featuring the most trans series regular actors ever in an American television production. Additionally, the first season 'Pose' will feature 50-plus LGBTQ characters — a record in American television history. I can't wait for people to see this incredibly talented, passionate cast."

'Game of Thrones' Star Talks 'Very Satisfying' Season 8: 'We're Going out With a Bang'

When "Game of Thrones" Season 8 finally premieres, Ben Crompton thinks we are going to like what we see.

The cast still hasn't finished shooting the hit HBO drama's final season, but Crompton, who plays Night's Watch steward Edd, spoke to Metro and shared that he thinks it will be "very satisfying." He acknowledged that, no matter what, there are bound to be fans with their own opinions about how the show should have ended, but he expects most to enjoy it.

"I'd be surprised if people are disappointed because there's a lot of effort and love gone into this, and I think it's very satisfying," he said.

Crompton spoke more on that hard work, highlighting how long they're spending on Season 8 in spite of the fact that the chapter will be shorter than all of its predecessors.

"Even though there's only six episodes, there's a lot to shoot because it's the last one," he said. "We're going out with a bang."

Unfortunately, Compton didn't say how much of him we'll see in Season 8 or what lies ahead for Edd. His role wasn't huge in Season 7, but the actor feels fortunate to have made it so deep into the series. As Crompton pointed out, "Game of Thrones" is a series "where characters get killed off so regularly"; just surviving from Season 2 through Season 7, as Edd did, is quite a feat.

We'll see the remaining characters continue to battle for power and try to survive White Walkers when "Game of Thrones" Season 8 premieres, likely in 2019.

'Grey's Anatomy' Star Giacomo Gianniotti Issued a 'Love Actually'-Inspired Christmas Request

Ridley Scott: 'Blade Runner 2049' Bombed Because 'It's Slow' & 'Way Too Long'

Ridley Scott is that guy who'll just tell you when you look fat. At least he'll wait until after you ask him how you look. And then he'll call himself "a bitch" for being so blunt.

Ridley Scott directed the first "Blade Runner" film, which came out in 1982, loosely based on a novel by Philip K. Dick. Ridley did not direct the 2017 sequel "Blade Runner 2049," although he was heavily involved with the script. Instead, "Arrival" and "Sicario" director Denis Villeneuve took the helm. "Blade Runner 2049" got rave reviews from critics, but underperformed big time at the box office.

Ridley is now on the promotion circuit for "All the Money in the World," and while getting candid about those reshoots, he got candid about Villeneuve's film.

At the end of this video, Al Arabiya's William Mullally asks Ridley about "Blade Runner":

Al Arabiya: "Blade Runner 2049 was a wonderful movie."

Ridley Scott: "Yes."

Al Arabiya: "But it didn't perform to expectations."

Ridley Scott: "No."

Al Arabiya: "What would you attribute that too, personally?"

Ridley Scott: "Um, it's slow. It's slow. Long. Too long. I would have taken out half an hour."

He said something similar -- but with more f-bombs -- to Vulture.

What did you make of the way Blade Runner 2049 was received?
[Whispers] I have to be careful what I say. I have to be careful what I say. It was f*cking way too long. F*ck me! And most of that script's mine.

After going into detail about the script, and his ideas, Ridley eventually stopped himself, saying, "I shouldn't talk. I'm being a bitch." That whole Vulture interview is gold -- including talk about "Star Wars" and the "Bohemian Rhapsody" mess.

But it's true that Ridley probably shouldn't talk, since there are seven different versions of his "Blade Runner" out there, including a U.S. theatrical cut, an international cut, the director's cut, and a final cut, among others. And "Blade Runner" was hardly a smash at the box office in its initial release either, with it too being called "slow" (even at 117 minutes vs. "2049" at 163 minutes.) The "misunderstood" film earned cult status, and was only accepted as a masterpiece over time.

Denis Villeneuve talked to Yahoo Entertainment about the reviews vs. box office disparity:

"I'm still digesting it. It had the best [reviews] of my life. I never had a movie welcomed like that. At the same time, the box office in the United States was a disappointment, that's the truth, because those movies are expensive. It will still make tons of money but not enough. The thing I think is that, it was maybe because people were not familiar enough with the universe. And the fact the movie's long. I don't know, it's still a mystery to me."

"Blade Runner 2049" just came out on digital this week, with the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD arriving on January 16. And then maybe we'll get half a dozen more versions later.

David Harbour Wants 'a Hopper & Steve Get-Together' in 'Stranger Things' Season 3

Entertainment Weekly Hosts Its Annual Comic-Con Party At FLOAT At The Hard Rock Hotel In San Diego In Celebration Of Comic-Con 2Steve + Hopper = Nancy, who?

Everyone wants to board the Steve Harrington train after "Stranger Things" Season 2. The Duffer Brothers gave a major showcase to Joe Keery's Steve, who had a great partnership with Gaten Matarazzo's Dustin. David Harbour recently earned Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations for playing Chief Jim Hopper, and he told Variety he'd love Hopper to have scenes with Steve and Dustin, in addition to his time with Winona Ryder's Joyce. Plus, he wants to delve deeper into Hopper's backstory.

These are just hopes, though, because Harbour told Variety he has no idea what's going to happen in "Stranger Things" Season 3. Even if he did know, he's "not allowed to talk to you about anything. Because I'm always the person that gets in trouble. But they haven't told me anything. I think I'll be in it though, that's all I know." (Speaking of things he's "not supposed to comment on," don't ask him about the stairwell.)

Here's what David Harbour told Variety he wants to see happen in Season 3:

"I've been pretty vocal about how I love the dynamic between Joyce and Hopper, which I don't feel like we got a lot of time to explore in Season 2. I just love that dynamic of these two lost people. I equate it to Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway in "'Chinatown' or Indiana Jones and Marion in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark.' These great, throwback, they hate each other but love each other kind of tropes. It's done so sophisticatedly by the Duffers, and Winona is really game for it, too. We love playing scenes with each other. I would love more stuff with her.

That's a feasible one — and then there's stuff that I don't think is feasible, but I do think the internet knows my love for Joe Keery. I would love to see a Hopper and Steve get-together, but I seriously doubt that's going to happen.

I'd love to work with Gaten. I want to get into the backstory of Hopper more. When Eleven goes into the basement, she sees a bunch of boxes, one of which says 'Hawkins Lab.' 'Dad.' 'Vietnam.' 'New York.' There's a lot of story we can get into around Hopper's time as a cop in New York, Hopper's time in Vietnam. I would love to see more of that, but we have a ton of great characters, so I don't know how much they'll be able to do."

Harbour added that there's "a lot of timeline stuff to explain" when it comes to Hopper's daughter Sara.

"Sara dies theoretically five years before our story. In terms of the timeline, we say in the first season that I moved back to Hawkins after that experience. And we have me calling my ex-wife, who is remarried and has a kid. There's a lot of rich material there, and with secrets around Sara and that whole event, which I hope we'll get into in future seasons. Maybe not in the way you think. But there is a lot more complexity to Hopper's relationship to Sara's death. I would love to see them go further into that."

Yes, please. That does seem like a reasonable hope, considering all of the backstory seeds planted in the first two seasons. And it doesn't seem out of the question for Hopper and Steve to team up, considering Steve has taken on a leadership role in taking care of the kids, and Hopper has done the same for Eleven/Jane. Steve could even end up joining the Hawkins police force. Would that be crazy?

"Stranger Things 3" has no release date yet, they haven't even started filming, but Harbour suspects it won't premiere until 2019.

Fans Remember Carrie Fisher One Year After Her Death: 'No One's Ever Really Gone'

The Midnight Mission 100th Anniversary Gala And Golden Heart AwardsCan you believe it's been a year?

On December 27, 2016, fans learned that Carrie Fisher had died. The accomplished writer and "Star Wars" icon had suffered a heart attack on December 23 during a flight from London to L.A. She was rushed to the hospital where she remained until her death. She was 60. The very next day, her mother -- screen icon Debbie Reynolds -- died at age 84, after suffering a stroke.

Fisher had already filmed her role as Princess/General Leia Organa in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," which was just released on December 15. Watching Episode VIII gave fans some bittersweet, heartbreaking final moments with the legend.

On the anniversary of her death, fans -- and her on-screen twin, Mark Hamill -- paid tribute:

That last one. So perfect. Mark Hamill may regret what he said about Luke Skywalker's storyline in "The Last Jedi," but he said just the right thing to honor Carrie.
