What's New on TV, Netflix, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: December 25-31

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's new on Netflix and TV, we've got you covered.

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital

"Blade Runner 2049"
Merry Christmas-to-New Year's week! This sequel to "Blade Runner," set 30 years after Harrison Ford's sci-fi classic, isn't quite what you'd call holiday viewing. That said, the highly acclaimed visual gem is available for post-Christmas viewing on digital starting Tuesday, Dec. 26, then then on Blu-ray, 4K, and DVD on January 16. Ford is back, alongside Ryan Gosling this time, with director Denis Villeneuve at the helm. There are many, many, many making-of bonus features with the Blu-ray and 4K, but also the DVD release.

"Pete the Cat: A Groovy New Year Holiday Special" (Amazon)
Here's something timely. This Amazon Original Series Holiday Special follows Pete the Cat and his search for a New Year's Resolution. "With the help of his family and friends, Pete sets out on a fun, musical ride to find one." The family-friendly special premieres Tuesday, Dec. 26 on Amazon Prime Video. (See below for more New Year's specials.)

"The Foreigner"
Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan teamed up for this action thriller directed by Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale") and costarring Katie Leung, Orla Brady, Charlie Murphy, and Michael McElhatton. Watch the cat-and-mouse story play out on Digital starting Dec. 26, then on Blu-ray, DVD, and On Demand January 9. Bonus features include interviews, trailers, and "The Making of The Foreigner."

New on Netflix

"Black Mirror" Season 4
Finally! "Black Mirror" fans, Christmas is coming a few days late for us, but it should be worth it. Season 4 of Charlie Brooker's mind-trip of a series (like a modern technology focused "The Twilight Zone") returns this Friday, Dec. 29. "It's hard to imagine a bright future, but we must." There are six standalone episodes, with star-studded casts. Watch the trailer below, or just start watching it all from a relatively blank slate on Friday. (Also, please watch the first three seasons. Not that you need to catch up on anything, since this is not a serialized show. They're just fantastic episodes.)
"Travelers" Season 2
This sci-fi series stars Eric McCormack as one of several "travelers" sent back from the future to prevent the collapse of society. Season 2 already aired in Canada and the rest of us will get the episodes on December 26.
