'Mad About You' Revival in the Works, Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt in Talks: Report

Mad About YouTelevision fans could be mad about "Mad About You" once more: A new report says the creative team behind the NBC sitcom is trying to stage a revival of the series.

TVLine has the scoop that original production company Sony Pictures Television is currently in "informal talks" with former stars Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt about reprising their roles for a new limited "Mad" run. The show originally ran for seven seasons on NBC, and aired its series finale in 1999, though TVLine reports that the Peacock network is not currently involved in revival negotiations.

Here's the (alleged) synopsis for the show's return, per a TVLine source:

" ... the new episodes would likely revolve around Paul and Jamie grappling with empty-nest syndrome in the wake of now-17-year-old daughter Mabel's admission to college."

Reiser, who also co-created the sitcom, is apparently quite passionate about the project, and along with fellow co-creator Danny Jacobson, is "leading the charge to resurrect the show," per TVLine's report. The comedian tipped his hand earlier this year that he was interested in making more "Mad," revealing in an interview with People in October that he was "open" to the idea "If we can find the story to tell."

That could be complicated by the original series's end, which flash-forwarded 22 years into the future, something that Reiser acknowledged while talking to People.

"... I was very proud of how we ended it really well. We even told the future a little bit, so our thinking at the time was, 'Let's make sure we never get tempted to come back. Let's tell them what happens,'" the actor told the magazine. "Now, because everybody's talking about it, I started to think, 'Maybe if there's a story we could come up with.' To me, it's interesting when I see my kids are growing and leaving the house. ... It's like we're in a new world that we don't know the rules of."

We'll see if Reiser and co. get the chance to explore that new world sometime soon.
