John Legend to Star in NBC’s ‘Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert’

John Legend Attends 'Turn Me Loose'Praise be — John Legend is taking on the titular role of NBC's 'Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.'

The network is staging a live broadcast of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's rock opera on Easter Sunday. Legend will play Jesus opposite Alice Cooper's Herod.

Legend is a 10-time Grammy winner, as well as an Oscar winner for his song "Glory," which he co-wrote with Common for the 2014 movie "Selma." He has also taken on acting roles in "La La Land," the television show "Underground" (which he produced), and "Soul Men."

(He is also one step from an EGOT, since he won a Tony earlier this year as a producer of the August Wilson revival "Jitney.")

"We're all overjoyed to have world-class musical artist and producer John Legend starring as Jesus," said Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment. "This score demands a singer with an amazing range and an actor with great depth, and there isn't anyone better to bring this story to a new audience. His casting is also groundbreaking as the traditional image of Christ will be seen in a new way.

Legend said, "I'm thrilled to join the cast of this production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.' It's such a powerful, meaningful musical and I'm humbled to be part of this performance. We've already formed an incredible team, and, as we finish casting, I'm certain we will put together some of the greatest talents around to do this work justice."
