'Professor Marston & The Wonder Women' Explores Wonder Woman's Origins

With "Wonder Woman" lassoing tons of cash, box office records, and critical raves, interest in the property is extremely high. And "Professor Marston & The Wonder Women" explores how the superheroine came to exist at all.

A teaser for the movie ran in front of "Wonder Woman," but now a full-length trailer provides more details. Professor William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans), who writes the "Wonder Woman" comics in the 1940s under the pseudonym Charles Moulton, and his wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca), begin a polyamorous relationship with college student Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote).

The movie explores themes like sadomasochism, bondage, feminism, kink, and polyamory — some of which were incorporated into "Wonder Woman" comics, much to shock and outrage of some readers and Marston's colleagues (one of whom is played by Connie Britton). The trailer compares Wonder Woman's secret identity to the necessity of hiding this unconventional union from the world.

'Professor Marston & The Wonder Women' opens in theaters October 27.
