'Suicide Squad 2' May Have a Director (But Not Mel Gibson)

The Worst Heroes Ever reportedly have a frontrunner to direct them in "Suicide Squad 2," and it's not Mel Gibson. Instead, according to Deadline, Warner Bros. is focused on "The Shallows" and "Orphan" director Jaume Collet-Serra for the sequel, which will again star Will Smith (Deadshot) and Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn).

Back in February, Mel Gibson confirmed that he had been approached for the job, but no offer had been made, since it was still the early stages. Warner Bros. had also been looking at Daniel Espinosa ("Safe House"), Ruben Fleischer ("Zombieland"), and Jonathan Levine ("Warm Bodies"). At the time, Gibson was said to be the studio's first choice, but The Hollywood Reporter just posted that script delays pushed the production start and Gibson moved on. Their report also listed Collet-Serra as the new frontrunner.

'The Shallows' World Premiere Arrivals"Suicide Squad," written and directed by David Ayer, was a critical flop but a box office win, earning more than $745 million worldwide. Ayer is staying in the DC/Warner family, moving on from "Suicide Squad" to direct and produce "Gotham City Sirens," starring Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and DC's other lady villains.

In June, Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag) said "Suicide Squad 2" was aiming to shoot sometime in 2018, and he was definitely planning to return. THR said the studio recently received a new treatment written by Zak Penn, and a new script will now be written.
