'The Walking Dead' Stuntman Dies After Tragic On-Set Accident

The stuntman who was seriously injured on the set of "The Walking Dead" has sadly passed away from his injuries, Variety reports.

John Bernecker died Wednesday evening at Atlanta Medical Center, Coweta County Coroner Richard Hawk tells Variety. After falling more than 20-feet off a balcony and hitting his head on concrete, he was transported to the nearest hospital by helicopter and placed on a ventilator, but did not survive.

AMC announced yesterday that they have temporarily shut down production on the show's eighth season in the wake of the tragedy.

Bernecker was a veteran stunt performer and fight choreographer, whose film credits include "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "Get Out," and "Logan," as well as Marvel's "Black Panther."

Lauren Cohan had previously tweeted out her hopes for Bernecker's recovery. After hearing of his death, other "Walking Dead" stars shared their condolences on Twitter, including Jordan Woods-Robinson, who plays Alexandria resident Eric, and Ann Mahoney, who played Olivia.

Among those paying their respects, Kellan Lutz, who worked with him on the 2015 Bruce Willis film "Extraction"; John Francis Daley, who worked with the stuntman on the upcoming "Game Night;" Bailey Chase, for whom Bernecker doubled on "24: Legacy;" and Samuel Roukin, who plays Lt. John Simcoe on "TURN: Washington's Spies."

Our condolences to his family and to the entire "The Walking Dead" cast and crew.
