Netflix Developing 'House of Cards' Spinoffs

"House of Cards" may be folding, but Netflix is looking to deal a new deck.

Yesterday brought the news that the still-in-production sixth season of "House of Cards" would be its last. That came on the heels of Anthony Rapp's sexual assault allegation against Kevin Spacey, and Spacey's subsequent, much-criticized apology.

Now, Variety reports that the streaming service and producer Media Rights Capital are developing several ideas for a spinoff of "House of Cards." All are set in the same universe as the original series, which follows Spacey's Frank Underwood, a scheming politician who rises to become president.

One of the spinoff ideas revolves around Doug Stamper, the political advisor played by Michael Kelly. Eric Roth, a former "House of Cards" executive producer and current EP of TNT's "The Alienist," is attached to write the script.

Netflix seems to be following the model of HBO, which is developing several "Game of Thrones" spinoff ideas at once, hoping at least one will stick.

"House of Cards" was Netflix's first major original series and has garnered many accolades over the years, including Emmy nominations for Best Drama Series, Best Actor for Spacey, and Best Actress for Robin Wright every year since it premiered.
