Selena Gomez on Francia Raisa's Kidney Donation: 'She Volunteered'

Unlikely Heroes' 3rd Annual Awards Dinner And GalaSelena Gomez is well aware that she is lucky to have Francia Raisa as a friend.

The two actresses have shared new details about Raisa's kidney donation to Gomez this summer, and they revealed that Gomez didn't even have to ask for help. In a "Today" interview, they explained that Raisa volunteered to be Gomez's donor after discovering the extent to which Lupus had ravaged her kidneys.

"I didn't want to ask a single person in my life," Gomez said. "The thought of asking somebody to do that was really difficult for me."

Her kidneys, however, "were done" and she was on the brink of needing dialysis. She confided into Raisa, telling her that the waiting list for a kidney could take seven to 10 years, according to the former "Secret Life of the American Teenager" star. That prompted Raisa to immediately volunteer to get tested to see if she was a match.

Initially, Gomez tried to deter Raisa because she was worried about the impact on her friend. Of course, as we know now, that didn't stop Raisa.

"She volunteered and did it," Gomez said.

Their surgeries took place this summer, and they went public with the news in September with a pair of touching posts on social media. Both are doing well now, but Gomez said it was "brutal" to get through.

Watch the two discuss the transplant below.

Now that's friendship.
