The great spoiler debate rages on, and let there be no mistake where "Game of Thrones" star Liam Cunningham stands when it comes to the "low-lifers" who leak intel from set.
The actor who plays Davos Seaworth will be back for Season 7, which premieres July 16 on HBO. He talked to the Irish Mirror about keeping quiet about what happens for the good of the viewers:
"The people who want to spoil it, they're low-lifers -- not fans. In Spain we were being live streamed while we were filming, from drones. Everything we've done has been infiltrated, which is terrible. It can appear like we are being precious about it, and it's not. One of the great things about the show is these bizarre surprises. I've seen these cynical critics going 'Oh my God, did you see that last week?' Suddenly the inner child comes out in them because they have been outwitted and they love it, and so does the audience. It's what we pay for. I like it as well, when I am reading the scripts I go 'Oh you've gotta be, you're sh*tting me,' and I love that."
Yes, ser. But let's be honest: Not everyone is paying. "Game of Thrones" isn't the No. 1 most pirated TV show for nothing.
"Game of Thrones" shoots a lot of scenes outside, in public or easy-to-access places, and it's insanely popular around the world; that combination does tend to lead to people snapping images whenever they can, and spreading the word around to other fans who want to know everything THE SECOND it happens. Not gonna lie, I want to know whatever I can know the second I can know it. But if there was no way to know anything in advance, that would keep the surprises fresh.
Season 7 is slightly different in that a rundown of the entire plot was reportedly leaked several months ago, which is above-and-beyond the usual surreptitious set photos. As Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) pointed out with frustration, that's the kind of thing only an "insider" could do. So there are some twists out there that were spoiled in advance for fans who may have gotten more than they bargained for by reading that rumored leak.
There will surely still be plenty of "bizarre surprises" ahead in Season 7, and also the final Season 8.
