Michael Keaton's 'Spider-Man Homecoming' Villain Is 'The Dark Tony Stark'

Don't expect over-the-top "penthouse-level" villainry from Michael Keaton's Vulture in "Spider-Man: Homecoming."

The former Batman plays Adrian Toomes (aka Vulture), a working-class guy who runs a salvage shop in New York City that cleans up other villain's messes, director Jon Watts tells USA Today. After Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) tries to muscle in on his salvage empire, Toomes becomes "the dark Tony Stark," says co-producer Eric Hauserman Carroll.

He and his crew, which includes the Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine) and the Tinkerer (Michael Chernus), scavenge alien artifacts and stolen tech and MacGyver them into weaponry they sell to other criminals.

Watts is thrilled to be able to use "this neat junk from all the other movies. It's a really great starting point for the villains to have the Vulture picking over the stuff and finding the valuable exotic elements and having the Tinkerer assemble into something that could be used."

He says he was inspired by John C. Reilly's character in "Guardians of the Galaxy," who's a normal guy caught up in a battle to save the universe.

"I like the idea that in these huge movies, you pick out one extra and you're like, 'What does he think of all this?'" Watts says. "Sometimes these movies are so casual about just destroying whole cities and incredible things happen and everyone's like, 'Eh, whatever.' If that really happened, it would be amazing and change everything."

He adds that in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, "you can be a villain and a real person, too. Being a supervillain isn't necessarily your full-time job."

In the teaser for the trailer that will drop tomorrow, we see Spider-Man (Tom Holland) confounded by the flying villain, who's Ant-Man-sized.

Holland previously told USA Today, "The first time we see the Vulture is terrifying. It's like a horror movie: really scary, very intense and shocking."

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" opens July 7th.
