Julia Roberts Named World's Most Beautiful Woman for the 5th Time (and Twitter Is Mad)

Julia Roberts brought her red mane and trademark grin to the cover of People for her record fifth cover as the World's Most Beautiful Woman. Roberts, now 49, was first on the cover in 1991 when she was 23, fresh off her "Pretty Woman" fame.

In the interview, Roberts talks about her marriage to cinematographer Danny Moder (14 years and counting) and life with twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, 12, and Henry, 9. She said she was "very flatttered" to be named Most Beautiful Woman a fifth time, and enjoyed hearing that she's now way ahead of George Clooney, who has only been People's Sexiest Man Alive twice. "I'm going to mention that in my Christmas card to the Clooneys this year." Roberts will turn 50 in October, and she sounds just fine with that, telling People, "I think I'm currently peaking."

Last year's Most Beautiful Woman was Jennifer Aniston. Before her, Sandra Bullock. Then Lupita Nyong'o, Beyonce, Christina Applegate, Kate Hudson, Drew Barrymore, Angelina Jolie.

Twitter is contrary by nature, so you had to know people would not like the choice of Julia Roberts, especially for a fifth time, and in 2017 when she's not exactly at the height of fame, and as People appears to be on a streak of picking "older" white women. There's a sad amount of ageism in some of the responses, as if 49 is too old to be taken seriously as beautiful. Thankfully, there's some backlash to that perspective as well.
