The trailer for "Detroit," Kathryn Bigelow's anticipated new movie after "Zero Dark Thirty" and "The Hurt Locker," is a tense, gripping first look at her take on the devastating 1967 riots in that city.
John Boyega stars as a police officer who is on the scene during the five days of the riot, which is described as a "war zone." The trailer introduces us to a group of African-American musicians partying at the Algiers motel. When a toy gun goes off, police storm the motel and start a deadly standoff.
The screenplay was penned by Mark Boal, who worked with Bigelow on her two previous films. She is still the only woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director, for "The Hurt Locker." Bigelow is a master at crafting highly compelling drama. And the subject matter is relevant to today. The racially-charged riots resulted in at least 43 deaths, hundreds of injuries, and tens of millions of dollars in property damage.
"Detroit" opens in theaters August 4.
