CBS Drops 'How I Met Your Dad'

how i met your dadPeople were all up in arms about the ending of "How I Met Your Mother," and the news that there would be a spin-off with Greta Gerwig was met with quite a lot of skepticism. Well, all you crankypants people will be relieved to know that CBS passed on "How I Met Your Dad." For now.

According to CBS entertainment chairman Nina Tassler, "There were elements on the pilot that didn't work out. We tried to work out about redoing the pilot. That's not happening right now. Sometimes you run into these kind of issues and you hope they can resolve themselves in that time frame." Although CBS felt "repiloting was in the best interest of protecting the creative elements of the show," it seems that Carter Bays, Craig Thomas, and Emily Spivey didn't agree.

But not so fast! There's still hope we can someday see Greta Gerwig dance the Sambola on primetime TV while Meg Ryan narrates. If 20th Century Fox was game, the show could land elsewhere, or given how "heartsick" Tassler is, there could still be some bargaining happening behind closed doors about doing an entirely new pilot. Perhaps they're testing the waters to see how viewers react to the news; if there's enough hubbub, it would certainly give CBS incentive to negotiate, and it would give the series creators leverage if they had other networks sniffing around. After all, no matter how fans felt by the end of "HIMYM," it was a franchise that just wouldn't quit; why wouldn't a show with a similar premise, led by the lovely Gerwig, be able to find a home on another network that would give them the leeway to do something new? Perhaps "How I Met Your Dad" wasn't formulaic enough to be a sure thing for CBS.

Whatever the case, the "Frances Ha" co-writer and star will surely land on her feet. TV's loss is film's gain, and vice versa.
