Watch the First Teaser for Ryan Gosling's Directorial Debut, 'Lost River' (VIDEO)

lost river teaser trailerFans of the Ryan Gosling of "Hey Girl" meme fame may want to sit out his directorial debut, "Lost River." Based on the film's first teaser clip, there's nothing cute or twee about this surreal thriller.

"Lost River" (formerly titled "How to Catch a Predator") focuses on single mother Billy (Christina Hendricks) and her two sons. The oldest boy, teenager Bones (Iain De Caestecker, "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D."), is front and center in this clip, which is full of images of fire (a bike, a building) and features "Doctor Who" star Matt Smith repeating the phrase "Look at my muscles" over and over as Bones breaks into a desperate run.

While it's hard to tell if Bones is afraid of Smith's character or just madly running toward something else, that seems to be the way Gosling wants it. According to the director's production notes, surreality and fantastical imagery are intentional, especially when considering his influences.

"This film was, in a lot ways, a gift from the directors I've been working with over the last few years," Gosling wrote. "I've gone between acting in films completely based in reality with Derek Cianfrance to the fevered dreams of Nicolas Winding Refn. I think I've vacillated between these two extremes because my own sensibilities as a filmmaker lay somewhere in-between."

It's clear from this clip that "Lost River" will blur the lines between those two styles as much as possible. We'll see if audiences can follow Gosling's heady inspirations.

"Lost River," which also stars Saoirse Ronan, Ben Mendelsohn, and Eva Mendes, is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday.
