'Space Oddity' Astronaut Chris Hadfield Honors David Bowie: 'Goodbye Starman'

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield shot to fame a few years ago thanks to a clever cover of David Bowie's classic tune "Space Oddity," which Hadfield recorded aboard the International Space Station. In the wake of Bowie's sudden death this weekend at age 69, Hadfield shared another tribute to the legendary artist.

The astronaut mourned the musician on Twitter, where he posted a message praising Bowie for his pioneering place in pop culture history. "Ashes to ashes, dust to stardust," Hadfield wrote. "Your brilliance inspired us all. Goodbye Starman."

Though Hadfield himself didn't re-post his "Space Oddity" video, many other media outlets did, and it's not hard to see why: The commander's poignant take on the iconic song was reportedly one of Bowie's favorite cover versions of the tune. When Hadfield first posted the song in 2013, rights issues briefly took it offline; thanks to Bowie's vocal support of the cover, it eventually returned YouTube. (The video's description now reads, in part, "Rest in peace, Starman.")
