It's no secret that the execs at AMC have no intention of letting "The Walking Dead" end anytime soon, offering up visions for the series to go on for ten seasons or more. So it makes sense, then, that they'd also want to explore additional spinoff -- sorry, "companion series" -- opportunities, too, after the success of last year's "Fear the Walking Dead."
That's the word from AMC president Charlie Collier and programming head Joel Stillerman, who spoke with Vulture for a lengthy chat about the future of the network's programming slate, and its crown jewel, "TWD." Both men assured Vulture that there's no end in sight for "Dead" just yet ("[W]e're very sensitive to making sure that every aspect of it feels fresh and original, and that it's not treated in any way that's derivative or taken for granted," Collier told the site), and addressed the question of whether there could be more spinoffs like "Fear" ahead.
The short answer? Yes. (But seriously, don't call them spinoffs -- the preferred terminology is "companion series," per Collier and Stillerman.) But not right away, and only if the story is right.
"[W]e are open to ideas that feel organic to the creators in whom we've put our trust," Collier told Vulture. "So if Robert had a world he wanted to explore, you can bet that we are not just leaning into that conversation, but we're actively engaging in it. Right now we're not in that conversation, and there's nothing to report at all. I'm a huge believer in Robert and the executive producers of these shows. We wanted to create a place where they would bring us their creative dreams and bring us their passion projects. If Robert had another one, we would absolutely engage. This is a world that is rich enough to handle it. Right now we're just focused on these two."
So while there is hope for more from the "Dead" world in the future, you'll have to make due with just "The Walking Dead" and "Fear the Walking Dead" for now. But based on how long both shows will probably be on the air, that shouldn't be too big of a loss.
