What's New on TV, Netflix, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: January 4-10

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.

New on DVD and Blu-ray

"Sicario"
Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Victor Garber star in this sharp, critically acclaimed (93 percent certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes!) drug war thriller, which is out on Blu-ray, DVD, and On Demand on January 5. Blu-ray bonus featurettes include "Stepping into Darkness: The Visual Design of Sicario," "Blunt, Brolin & Benicio: Portraying the Characters of Sicario," "Battle Zone: The Origins of Sicario," and "A Pulse from the Desert: The Score of Sicario."

"The Walk"
Watch Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Philippe Petit take a wild walk on a wire between the Twin Towers. The bio-drama from director Robert Zemeckis co-stars Sir Ben Kingsley, Charlotte Le Bon, James Badge Dale, and Ben Schwartz. The Blu-ray and DVD both include the "Pillars of Support" featurette, highlighting Petit's partners in crime. The Blu-ray alone also has deleted scenes and two more featurettes, "First Steps" and "The Amazing Walk."

"Infinitely Polar Bear"
Mark Ruffalo plays a bipolar dad in Boston who takes responsibility for his two daughters while his wife (Zoe Saldana) heads to graduate school in New York in this heartwarming indie dramedy now out on disc. Extras include audio commentary with Rufalo, writer/director Maya Forbes, and producer Wally Wolodarsky; a Q&A at the L.A. Film Festival; four deleted scenes; and the theatrical trailer.

"Broad City"
Check out Season 2 of Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer's brilliant Comedy Central series this week on DVD/Blu-ray. Guest stars for the 10-episode season include Bob Balaban, Aidy Bryant, Patricia Clarkson, Susie Essman, Janeane Garofalo, Kumail Nanjiani, Kelly Ripa, Seth Rogen, Amy Ryan, Alia Shawkat, and David Wain. DVD bonus features includes outtakes, deleted scenes, a Pop-Up Enhanced Episode, the "Hack Into Broad City" series, and "Body By Trey" videos. FYI, Season 3 premieres February 17.

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only

"Straight Outta Compton"
One of the top movies of 2015 -- following the true story of N.W.A. -- has its Digital HD release on January 5, with the Blu-ray and DVD releases to follow on January 19. There's an unrated director's cut of the film that you can check out, and the Blu-ray and DVD will both include a bunch of special features. Since this is a movie about music, Universal Music Enterprises is also releasing "Straight Outta Compton: The Soundtrack" and "Straight Outta Compton: Original Motion Picture Score" on January 8.

"Jem and the Holograms"
It is "truly outrageous" that they made a live-action version of this '80s pop music cartoon, but they did, so why not check it out on Digital HD this week, with Jem and company making their DVD/Blu-ray debuts on January 19.

"Robo-Dog"
Patrick Muldoon plays an inventor who creates a mechanical dog for his young son (Michael Campion) when the kid needs a new best friend. But when a greedy corporate type sees the value of Robo-Dog, he plots to steal him -- and that plot could accidentally blow up the town in the process. Oops! The family film, which co-stars Olivia d'Abo, is out on both DVD and Digital HD January 5.

New on Netflix

"Dragons: Race to the Edge"
Here you go, "How to Train Your Dragon," fans: Season 2 of this Netflix Original series debuts January 8. "Race to the Edge" takes place in the period between the first two "How To Train Your Dragon" films and follows Hiccup, Toothless, Astrid, and friends on their many adventures.

"Training Day"
Antoine Fuqua's modern classic crime drama -- starring Denzel Washington as a veteran LAPD officer and Ethan Hawke as the rookie he trains -- is available for Netflix streaming on January 4. It's as powerful now as it was in 2001.

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"
Perfect timing: Netflix is offering Season 10 of this must-watch comedy starting January 5, which is the day before Season 11 premieres on FXX. So have yourself a 10-episode New Year's binge, and prepare to shake your head anew at the crazy antics of the Paddy's Pub crew.

TV Worth Watching

"The Bachelor" (Monday on ABC at 8 p.m.)
Yes, it's worth watching -- to feel better about yourself. The ultimate guilty pleasure show returns January 4, with blandly sweet Ben Higgins handing out roses to women who will inevitably steamroll him into submission. As you watch this trainwreck, you can almost literally feel your brain turning to mush, but it's just as addictive as the junk food that turns your stomach to mush, so ... what's life without a little mush? Believe it or not, there's also a "Bachelor Live" post-show airing from 10 to 11 p.m. with special guests discussing what just happened on the Season 20 premiere.

"Golden Globe Awards" (Sunday on NBC at 8 p.m.)
Ricky Gervais is back, and so -- officially! -- is awards season. The 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards air from 8 to 11 p.m. January 10, but first -- if you're into fashion and awkward small talk -- you can check out the 2016 Golden Globe Arrivals Special at 7 p.m. on NBC. Or you can switch over to E! which will have its own red carpet coverage from 6 to 8 p.m. Here are this year's Golden Globe nominations, to get you up to date.

"Lip Sync Battle" (Thursday on Spike at 10 p.m.)
No idea how these lip sync battles became must-see TV, but they did. Now Season 2 is here to up the ante, with the January 7 premiere offering the "Tatum Takedown" of Channing Tatum vs. wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum. Word on the street says Beyoncé will be showing up to help Chan, which pretty much guarantees he'll win. Future Season 2 battles include Kevin Hart vs. Olivia Munn, Anthony Anderson vs. Tracee Ellis Ross, Chris D'Elia vs. Brent Morin, and Nina Dobrev vs. Tim Tebow.

"Netanyahu at War" (Tuesday on PBS at 9 p.m.)
Let's get serious for a minute. For every hour of junk like "The Bachelor," you owe your brain some vegetables like this two-hour Frontline documentary from veteran filmmaker Michael Kirk. "Netanyahu at War" follows the Israeli prime minister's path to power, goes inside his relationships with multiple U.S. presidents -- including his clash with President Obama over the Iran nuclear deal -- and explores the implications of those relationships in the U.S. and the Middle East.
