What's New on Netflix, TV, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: February 8-14

New on DVD and Blu-ray

"Spectre"
Take Bond -- James Bond -- home with you on February 9 with the DVD, Blu-ray, and On Demand release of "Spectre." You know 007 does not do "small" and the discs come with a worthy amount of extras. The Blu-ray includes the featurette "SPECTRE: Bond's Biggest Opening Sequence," and both the Blu-ray and DVD releases include six video blogs: "Director – Sam Mendes," "Supercars," "Introducing Léa Seydoux and Monica Bellucci," "Action," "Music," and "Guinness World Record."

"The Leftovers" Season 2
Please, please, please, PLEASE, please open your mind and give this HBO drama a try. It will challenge you. It will frustrate you. And heaven knows no one can give you any answers on what it all means 'cause it's possible even showrunner Damon Lindelof doesn't know. But it's the most profound, and profoundly underrated, show on TV right now, and it shows why Justin Theroux deserves to be known for more than marrying Jennifer Aniston and writing movies like "Zoolander." Season 2 is out on disc this week. It's better than Season 1, but to get the full effect you should watch Season 1 first. Season 3, the final season, is coming ... eventually.

"Star Trek" 50th Anniversary Collections
Happy Valentine's Day, Trekkies! This week, the "Star Trek: Original Movie Collection (1979-1991)" and "Star Trek: Next Generation Movie Collection (1994-2002)" arrive on Blu-ray featuring new 50th Anniversary packaging. "The Original Motion Picture Collection" includes "The Motion Picture," "The Wrath of Khan," "The Search for Spock," "The Voyage Home," The Final Frontier" and "The Undiscovered Country"; "The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection" has "Generations," "First Contact," "Insurrection," and "Nemesis." That's a lot of discs, although there's no official word on any special extras. But beam it up, engage, live long and prosper, etc., on February 9.

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only

"The Night Before"
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, and Anthony Mackie star in this R-rated comedy, which is out on Digital HD February 9 and Blu-ray/DVD March 1. The trio play best friends since childhood who have an annual Christmas Eve celebration known for its debauchery. But now that they're getting on in years, the tradition is coming to an end. So to make the last one as memorable as possible, they set out to find the Nutcracka Ball, the Holy Grail of Christmas parties. The stoner bromance co-stars Lizzy Caplan, Mindy Kaling, Michael Shannon, and Jillian Bell. The Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital versions all include a cast gag reel, "Making One Epic Party: 20 Minutes of On-Set Shenanigans," and four featurettes. The Blu-ray and Digital also include deleted and extended scenes, and more of Michael Shannon's Mr. Green moments in "Mr. Green Line-O-Rama."

"Secret in Their Eyes"
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Julia Roberts, and Nicole Kidman star in this remake of the Argentinian film that won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2010. The mystery thriller is out on Digital HD February 9, with the discs to follow on February 23. The story flashes between past (13 years ago) and present, as a tight-knit team of investigators and their supervisor are torn apart when one of their own teenage daughters is brutally murdered.

"The Peanuts Movie"
Charlie Brown embarks on a heroic quest, as Snoopy takes to the skies to pursue the Red Baron, in this feature film from the creators of "Ice Age." It's out on Digital HD February 12, with the discs dropping on March 8. Both the Blu-ray and Digital HD releases include six all-new "Snoopy Snippets," a documentary about Charles Schulz and the history of the Peanuts gang, music videos, and a lot more.

TV Worth Watching

"The Walking Dead" (Sunday on AMC at 9 p.m.)
Some people spend Valentine's Day with dinner and a movie, but TWD fans have a date with the Dead, 'cause Season 6 returns February 14. We last saw Rick Grimes and friends trying to quietly make their way through the walkers who had overrun Alexandria (someone get Carol to scare Sam into shutting his dang mouth), while Daryl, Abraham, and Sasha met some new bad guys out on the road. Episode 9 is meant to be bigger and bloodier than ever, so don't miss what everyone will be talking about on Monday morning.

"Project Runway: All Stars" (Thursday on Lifetime at 9 p.m.)
In fashion, one day you're in, and the next day you're out. And sometimes the next year or even the next decade you're back in. "All Stars" Season 5 brings back an eclectic mix of past "Project Runway" designers, including Daniel Franco of the very first two seasons, plus our beloved Kini Zamora. There are some question mark additions to the cast, but we're willing to keep an open mind. As long as the fashion is good, the rest is extra.

"Vinyl" (Sunday on HBO at 9 p.m.)
This 1970s-set music series was created by the A-list team of Mick Jagger, Martin Scorsese, Rich Cohen, and Terence Winter -- and it's on HBO -- so it's basically must-see all around. Bobby Cannavale stars as Richie Finestra, a record executive trying to resurrect his label. Olivia Wilde plays his wife, and the supporting cast includes Ray Romano, Max Casella, Juno Temple, and Ato Essandoh.

"The Amazing Race" (Friday on CBS at 8 p.m.)
The 28th (!) season of "Amazing Race" follows 11 teams of Internet celebrities -- YouTubers and Vine stars -- which could be annoying for any non-fans. But whatever. The Race is The Race, and it's always a thrilling ride. This season reportedly heads to 18 cities in 10 countries, visiting a few for the first time, so at the very least it's worth watching for a "free" trip around the world, all from your couch.

New on Netflix

"Dope"
This coming-of-age comedy/drama was a big hit at last year's Sundance Film Festival, and it's available on Netflix starting February 10. Shameik Moore stars as Malcolm, who is trying to survive life in a tough L.A. neighborhood while juggling college applications, academic interviews, and the SAT. An invitation to an underground party leads him on an adventure that may take him from being a geek to being "dope," but ultimately helps him to just be himself.

"The Girl in the Book"
"Revenge" alum Emily VanCamp stars in this critically acclaimed drama set in the world of New York publishing. She plays book editor Alice, who confronts difficult memories when asked to manage the re-release of an author's (Michael Nyqvist) bestselling novel, which is actually based on incidents from her own life. The story alternates between past and present, with Alice struggling to find the strength to face the troubling events she has kept hidden for years. Catch it on Netflix starting February 10.

"The Face of Love"
In this romantic drama -- available February 13, just in time for Valentine's Day -- Annette Bening plays a lonely widow who begins a romance with an art teacher (Ed Harris) who looks just like her late husband ... although she doesn't tell the new guy about the resemblance. Robin Williams is on of the co-stars in this 2013 film, so at the very least you could stream it just to see him again.
