'Bye, Grey's Anatomy'! Sarah Drew to Play Cagney in 'Cagney & Lacey' Reboot

Well, somebody bounced back fast!

It wasn't even a full week ago that "Grey's Anatomy" stars Sarah Drew (April Kepner) and Jessica Capshaw (Arizona Robbins) were let go from the series for "creative" reasons. Drew had said in a March 8 post to fans that she had known about the shakeup for less than 48 hours.

But one full week later and look: According to Deadline, Sarah Drew just landed the co-lead of CBS's "Cagney & Lacey" reboot pilot. She'll play LAPD Detective Cagney, Lacey's "nimble and easygoing partner and protégée."

"Blindspot" alum Michelle Hurd will play Lacey, "athletic, polished, a former high school track and field champion; empathetic and straightforward, she's the more experienced partner."

Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless played the original characters in the 1980s police procedural, which earned both actresses drama Emmys.

Brushing aside the question of whether the world needs a "Cagney & Lacey" reboot, you could argue this is an upgrade for both actresses. Last week, Drew had a supporting role in a huge ensemble cast on "Grey's," and now she's co-leading her own show. Well done. (Drew is still appearing on "Grey's Anatomy" Season 14. We don't know how they're going to write off April, but here's hoping Shonda doesn't just kill her off. Think of baby Harriet!)

So far, this is just for the pilot. It's not clear yet whether CBS will pick up "Cagney & Lacey." But now we just need a good new role for Jessica Capshaw, preferably similar to Arizona.
