Why the 'Avengers: Infinity War' Trailer's Iconic Battle Shot Isn't in the Movie

SPOILERS AHEAD FROM AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.

It's the scene captured in the photo above, with the heroes running or flying into battle as a united front. It was also captured in multiple GIFs after the first trailer. It was the first major hype moment for "Avengers: Infinity War." And it never happened in the actual movie.

"Avengers 3" had plenty of wow moments, so it's not like they needed that particular shot from the battle in Wakanda, but it was slightly false advertising -- especially for the Hulk's storyline. Hulk wasn't even in that battle because Bruce Banner was too busy battling with the Hulk himself.

The Russo brothers, who directed "Avengers 3" and next year's "Avengers 4," talked to the Happy Sad Confused podcast about scenes from the trailer that didn't make the movie. (They also previewed an upcoming deleted scene for Comicbook.)

Here's what the Russos said about the iconic running shot (via Collider):

"That shot that you're referencing was never in the movie in the version that you saw. It was never even created for the movie in that version. It was literally created in that version for the trailer."

Thanos' line, "Fun isn't something one considers when balancing the universe, but this does put a smile on my face" was also cut from the first trailer. Here's what the Russos said about that:

"That was a scripted line for the movie that we replaced with another line that we thought was a little more specific to the storytelling with Gamora. I think he used to say that on Nowhere to Gamora when he emerged from the Reality Cloak as the aether exposed him. And I think we changed it to something that was a little more specific to the storytelling."

Here's more on their trailer creation process:

"We look at the trailer as a very different experience than the movie, and I think audiences are so predictive now that you have to be very smart about how you craft a trailer because an audience can watch a trailer and basically tell you what's gonna happen in the film. We consume too much content. So at our disposal are lots of different shots that aren't in the movie that we can manipulate through CG to tell a story that we want to tell specifically for the purpose of the trailer and not for the film."

Sometimes they have material left over, and that ends up a deleted scene for the eventual digital/Blu-ray release.

Anthony Russo told Comicbook they "do have a few" deleted scenes for "Infinity War," despite their thorough process with the screenwriters ending with a "pretty tight" vision for what they want in the movie.

"One of the most substantial [deleted scenes] is a scene we really loved. It's a scene between the Guardians, between Pratt, Drax, and Mantis. And it's at that moment in the movie where they have lost Gamora to Thanos in the Knowhere and they don't know what to do about it. They don't know where to go. They have no idea what to do. And it serves as this very absurd scene about the Guardians not knowing what to do, that's very, very funny. And even though we loved the scene, the movie just wasn't asking for it at that moment."

So that's a scene to look forward to in the "Infinity War" home release. And when the "Avengers 4" trailers start coming out, don't go thinking every major shot will make it to the final movie.
