What's New on Netflix, TV, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: February 1-7

New on DVD and Blu-ray

"Bridge of Spies"
Steven Spielberg's mid-20th Century Cold War drama is nominated for six Academy Awards -- Best Picture, Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Mark Rylance), Original Score, Production Design, Sound Mixing, and Original Screenplay. Tom Hanks stars as Brooklyn lawyer James Donovan, who is sent by the CIA on a near-impossible mission to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. The movie is out on DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital HD on February 2. Blu-ray bonus featurettes, which go behind-the-scenes of the film and showcase the real-life historical events, include "A Case of the Cold War: Bridge of Spies," "U-2 Spy Plane: Beale Air Force Base," "Spy Swap: Looking Back on the Final Act," and "Berlin 1961: Recreating the Divide."

"Falling Skies"
TNT's epic alien-invasion saga is coming home. "Falling Skies the Complete Fifth Season" and "Falling Skies the Complete Series" land on Blu-ray and DVD on February 2. The fifth season set features farewell interviews with the cast and crew -- including Noah Wyle, Colin Cunningham, and Doug Jones -- plus "A Look Back," an exclusive group interview with Doug Jones, Colin Cunningham, and Sarah Carter. "The Complete Series" box set features the entire 52-episode series run, plus hours of bonus content, including behind-the-scenes features, commentaries, character interviews, and more.

"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" Signature Collection
Disney's 1937 classic is getting a signature edition release on Blu-ray on February 2. (The movie was also released on Digital for the first time in mid-January.) Bonus features include several featurettes, including, "In Walt's Words: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Iconography," "Disney Animation," "The Fairest Facts of Them All: 7 Facts You May Now Know About Snow White," "Snow White in Seventy Seconds," and an alternate sequence, showing a never–before-seen storyboard sequence where the Prince meets Snow White.

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only

"Spotlight"
This major Best Picture contender, following the Boston Globe "Spotlight" team's investigation into abuse by Catholic priests, is out on Digital on February 2, with the DVD/Blu-ray discs to follow on February 23. It's hard to make bare-bones journalism riveting -- going through files, cold calling people, re-interviewing the same lawyer over and over -- but Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, and Rachel McAdams might just make you see these reporters are superheroes.

"Steve Jobs"
Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet are both Oscar nominees for their roles in this Danny Boyle biopic, which is out on Digital HD on February 2. The film goes backstage at three iconic Apple product launches, and shows us the man behind the tech legend. You can wait for the discs to drop on February 16, but since it's about a digital demigod, he'd probably want you to download it.

"The 33"
Antonio Banderas, Rodrigo Santoro, Juliette Binoche, Gabriel Byrne, and Lou Diamond Phillips star in this inspiring drama based on the true story of survival. In 2010, 33 miners were buried alive by an explosion, and an international team spent the next 69 days working around the clock to try and rescue them. Watch the Digital HD version February 2, with the discs to follow February 16.

"Martyrs"
Troian Bellisario, Bailey Noble, and Kate Burton star in this retelling of the French 2008 cult horror film. This 2015 version, written by the co-writer of "The Revenant," is out on VOD February 2, after hitting theaters and Digital HD on January 22.

"Mad Men" Season 7, Part 2
Starting February 5, you can stream the final season of the modern classic that is "Mad Men," and appreciate for the first time -- or all over again -- that badass swagger from Peggy Olson. You earned it, Pegs.

"Armageddon"
Grab your animal crackers now so you don't miss a thing when Michael Bay's 1998 testosterone-fueled blockbuster blasts onto Netflix on February 1. As usual, the first of the month has a ton of releases, so if you don't want to watch Ben Affleck flirt with Liv Tyler as Bruce Willis saves the world, you have many other options.

"Full Metal Jacket"
One of the other February 1 options is Stanley Kubrick's lauded 1987 Vietnam War film, starring Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'Onofrio, and R. Lee Ermey as the incredibly quotable Gunnery Sgt. Hartman.

"Better Call Saul"
Another February 1 title coming to Netflix is the first season of Bob Odenkirk's "Breaking Bad" spinoff, "Better Call Saul." The timing is pretty good, since Saul Goodman returns to AMC for Season 2 starting February 15. So you have two weeks to catch up on Season 1, which is more time than you'll need.

TV Worth Watching

"The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" (Tuesday on FX at 10 p.m.)
This could be amazing. It could be awful. It's certainly going to be interesting. The limited series, based on Jeffrey Toobin's book "The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson," takes viewers into the O.J. Simpson trial, with an in-depth look at the legal teams on both sides. The all-star cast is led by Cuba Gooding Jr., John Travolta, Sarah Paulson, David Schwimmer, and Courtney B. Vance.

"Madoff" (Wednesday and Thursday on ABC at 8 p.m.)
Between "Billions," "Madoff," and the presidential election, 2016 is determined to keep the 1 percent at the center of our lives. This two-night (February 3-4) movie event stars Richard Dreyfuss as Bernie Madoff, with Blythe Danner as his wife Ruth, and follows the rise and fall of the former investment adviser and the fallout from his massive financial scam.

Kitten Bowl & Puppy Bowl (Sunday on Hallmark and Animal Planet)
There's something called the "Super Bowl" airing this weekend, but who cares? Bring on the fur bowls! Hallmark Channel is hosting "Kitten Bowl III" Sunday, February 7 at noon. Animal Planet's "Puppy Bowl" airs the same day at 3 p.m. And then a couple of teams will play football around 6:35 p.m. ET. The commercials should be good, anyway.
