Angelina Jolie is already an Oscar-winning actress, a successful director, and a United Nations goodwill ambassador, and her next role is equally impressive: She'll be teaching a course at the prestigious London School of Economics.
The university announced on Monday that Jolie would join the school's Centre for Women, Peace and Security as one of several visiting professors heading up a new curriculum aimed at "developing strategies to promote gender equality and enhance women's economic, social and political participation and security." The one-year master's program will offer courses including "Women, Peace and Security," "Gender and Militarisation," and "Gender and Human Rights."
Jolie co-founded the Centre in 2015 alongside former UK foreign secretary Lord William Hague, who will also serve as a visiting professor for the program. The pair also co-founded the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative in 2012 in order to "raise awareness, rally global action, promote greater international coherence and increase the political will and capacity of states to do more to address the culture of impunity that exists for these crimes, to increase the number of perpetrators held to account and to ensure better support for survivors," according to the LSE.
"I am very encouraged by the creation of this master's programme," Jolie said in a statement. "I hope other academic institutions will follow this example, as it is vital that we broaden the discussion on how to advance women's rights and end impunity for crimes that disproportionately affect women, such as sexual violence in conflict. I am looking forward to teaching and to learning from the students as well as to sharing my own experiences of working alongside governments and the United Nations."
The program will begin accepting applicants this fall. More information about the Centre for Women, Peace and Security is available here.
