Here's How 'Marvel's Inhumans' Went From TV Show to IMAX Event

"This is the show when I was growing up that I wished was on TV," muses Marvel Television head, onetime comic book writer and longtime comics reader Jeph Loeb of "Marvel's Inhumans," the latest TV version of one of the company's longest-running group of characters.

The Royal Family of the Inhumans –- an offshoot of the human race that have been genetically modified to each possess incredible powers eons ago by the advanced alien race known as the Kree -- have been part of the Marvel Universe for over 50 years. They made their collective comic book debut in a 1965 issue of The Fantastic Four, the creative brainchildren of the two most legendary Marvel pillars, writer/editor Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby.

Always ahead of his time, Kirby in particular did some of his most innovative and imaginative character designs while dreaming up the family: Black Bolt, the Inhumans' leader who can level a mountain with a single whisper; Medusa, who has complete control of her incredibly strong hair; her younger sister Crystal, who can control the four elements; Triton, the green-scaled amphibian; Gorgon, who seismically stomps with powerful hooves for feet; Karnak, the martial artist with the ability to detect flaws in anything; Crystal's colossal, teleporting bulldog Lockjaw; and their recurring adversary, Black Bolt's devious, completely human brother Maximus.

Briefly planned as one of Marvel Studios' blockbuster big-screen outings and set to be released in 2019, the "Inhumans" property was ultimately claimed by Marvel's TV division, developed by writer-producer Scott Buck (who previously brought Marvel's Netflix series "Iron Fist" to television) and is now set to premiere its eight-episode season on Sept. 29. But "Inhumans" still has a life in movie theaters ahead of it: the first two episodes were shot in the epic IMAX format and will be playing on screens across the country Sept. 1.
While Loeb doesn't necessarily think that the Inhumans were a better fit TV, he says he felt that "it was something that we could tell a compelling story about [on television] because it was a story about a family. We never really approached it as something that was going to be spectacle first and family second... This was an opportunity for us to be able to tell a story about people, even if those people were royals and that lived on the moon and that had a voice that could level a city."

While priding Marvel's TV division for finding ways to keep its super characters grounded and relatable, Loeb leapt at the opportunity to blow the series up big at IMAX's suggestion.

"I've been looking for that television show that really captured the way that what Kirby drew could not be contained within a page of comics. It always felt like the borders were not big enough and that he was always reaching out beyond," he says. "When we partnered with IMAX, the idea of being able to do something that was that big -- that you were going to be able to travel in to space, in to the moon, in to the city -- and be able to meet these people, and to see that kind of scope, that was very exciting to me."

Buck says he enjoyed his learning curve with the characters as he attempted to marry their epic mythology and outsized abilities to recognizable, familial stories. "I was not that familiar with the Inhumans, so once I began to take on this project, I started from the very beginning," he says. "What was fun about them was just that they are such fun characters, and that they are a family. Rather then dealing with one superhero, we're dealing with a whole family within a race of people who all have a gift."

Buck found taking on a clan of powered characters a distinctly different challenge than his experience on the single, powered one-lead "Iron Fist" -- but there was a certain common Marvel quality to both series.

"'Inhumans' is such a much more fantastical show, but at the same time, what was so important about 'Iron Fist' was just as important about this show: Make sure -- as crazy as some of the stuff is -- that all our characters feel real. That their actions are relatable, and genuine, and grounded. That the things they want are things that everyone can relate to. So they can have crazy, wild super powers, but underneath it all -- they're not so different from the rest of us."

"In every good TV show, the protagonist has an internal journey that matches the show's external journey," says Anson Mount, who plays Black Bolt. "He's a leader who's mistaken his need to be calculated and secretive with [emotions]. And he doesn't realize that's a mistake yet. You can't lead people by holding back the emotional part of yourself or any part of yourself, because -- as a king -- your identity is the state."

Serinda Swan said she relished the notion of diving into Medusa's comic book history as she prepared to take on the role.

"I got my assistant, and I'm like, 'Get everything you can! Everything Inhumans and everything Marvel you possibly can!'" she laughs. "She's existed long before I have, and I think it's important that you go back and you take a look. But one of the things that Scott Buck had told us was: 'Please don't tie yourself to what you've read.' Not because we don't want to do it justice, but because we're not showing every single side."

"Normally with television, you have to force yourself to think small; it's going to go on a screen," says Buck. "Especially these days when so many people are watching something on just a small cell phone. Where as this, we were pushing to think big. Not just in terms of image, but in terms of character, of the world we were creating. It was just a fun challenge to go the opposite direction you might normally go for a TV show."

'Marvel's Inhumans' hits IMAX theaters Friday.

Watch Miley Cyrus Get Teary Over Hurricane Harvey, Donate $500,000 on 'Ellen'

102.7 KIIS FM's 2017 Wango Tango - ShowMiley Cyrus put her money where her mouth is, big time, on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

The singer-slash-actress stopped by the talk show on Wednesday, and host Ellen DeGeneres revealed that Cyrus had told her backstage about her plan to donate $500,000 for Hurricane Harvey relief. It is clearly a cause that matters to Cyrus. The philanthropic entertainer, who has her own nonprofit, the Happy Hippie foundation, started to open up about her donation but quickly got too emotional.

"I can't really talk about it," she said as she got chocked up and teary-eyed. "I don't know why it makes me so upset."

She quickly managed to collect herself, though, and talked about what being able to do something means to her and how she hopes others will respond.

"I'm really happy to help any way that I can, and I hope people understand and can put themselves in those people's shoes and just know what it feels like to have everything taken away from you," Cyrus said.

DeGeneres commended her generous guest, calling her "amazing" and "so sweet," and then later applauded her in a tweet, as well.

Cyrus joins a growing list of big-name celebrities who have made large donations to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey, including Oscar winner Sandra Bullock, who donated $1 million through the Red Cross, DeGeneres herself, and still others.

'Chicago Fire' Fans Torn After Season 6 Poster and Promo Give Conflicting Hints

"Chicago Fire" is officially having too much fun torturing us.

Season 5 left fans with an agonizing cliffhanger, and the show has only continued to prey on concern for the fate of Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) since. The uncertainty got especially bad Thursday, when NBC unveiled a new poster that got fans' hopes only, only to be followed by a tearjerker of a promo hinting at a devastating outcome.

Let's start with the good: the poster. With Casey nearly front and center, that seems like a good sign, right?

Many fans certainly seemed to think the poster indicated he would survive, as they indicated in hopeful tweets.

But then came the new promo and its much more tragic tease. The video reminds us of all of our "burning questions" without answering our biggest one. We see Casey being found, but there is no clear evidence that he is alive. To make matters worse, the promo shows what looks like a memorial service, and then it ends with a photo of Casey that could very well be displayed at a funeral.

Just as we're sure NBC wanted it to, the promo stirred up a lot of concern.

We're ready for the answers to these burning questions now, but we're stuck waiting till "Chicago Fire" Season 6 premieres on Sept. 28 on NBC.

'Game of Thrones' Prophecy Makes Cersei 'Envious' of Daenerys, Says Lena Headey

"Game of Thrones" Season 5 seems so far away now, but one flashback scene it revealed seems especially important now.

Lena Headey (Cersei) brought up the scene during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. (Season 7 finale spoiler ahead!) While offering her character's take on Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), whom she met in Episode 7, "The Dragon and the Wolf," Headey reminded us of the prophecy Cersei heard as a teen and explained that the meeting likely brought the memory "the forefront of her mind."

The prophecy, which was revealed in a Season 5 flashback, came from a witch and fortune teller named Maggy (Jodhi May) after teenage Cersei demanded information about her future. The witch complied, and what she said now seems extremely prescient.

"You'll be queen ... for a time," she said. "Then comes another -- younger, more beautiful -- to cast you down and take all you hold dear."

Yes, that sounds bad for Cersei, so we can't blame Headey for thinking her character would be bothered by her rival.

"I think she's immediately envious because Daenerys is more beautiful and younger than she is," the actress said, "and the prophecy says somebody younger and more beautiful will take her place."

While Cersei has already lost much of what she holds dear, she still has power, and she has proven she is willing to fight for it. The possibility of losing it gives Cersei a lot to fear, especially since other parts of what Maggy said proved to be true. Not only did the witch predict Cersei's marriage to a king, Maggy also said she would have -- and lose -- three children, which is currently true. Depending on whether or not Cersei is actually pregnant and delivers a baby, we'll know how much weight to give the prophecy.

"Game of Thrones" Season 8 is due in late 2018 or as late as 2019.

'Grey's Anatomy' EP Kills Hope of Sara Ramirez Returning in Season 14 ... For Now

ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" - Season TwelveWhen Sara Ramirez said goodbye to "Grey's Anatomy" in Season 12, it sounded more like "see you later"; yet, so far, that "later" still hasn't come.

Debbie Allen, one of the ABC drama's executive producers, has made it clear that a Ramirez return as her character, Dr. Callie Torres, is not currently in the works. The EP told TVLine that "there are no plans at the moment" to bring back the fan favorite orthopedic surgeon.

"We love her and we miss her, [but] there's been no discussion of it," Allen said.

We also miss Callie, so we're focusing on the possible silver lining here: Allen said "at the moment," which leaves the door open for the future. Ramirez herself did the same when she left the show, saying that she was taking "some time off." The actress even indicated that she and producers would "definitely continue our conversations, making it seem very possible that Callie could someday do another stint at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

If Callie does return at any point, many fans will be angling for her to rekindle her relationship with Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw). Her former co-worker and love is going to be back on the market in Season 14 after the departure of Dr. Eliza Minnick (Marika Dominczyk). With that being the case, "Calzona" shippers have reason to hang onto at least some hope.

No, we won't see Ramirez when "Grey's Anatomy" Season 14 premieres on Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, but we will wait and see what the future holds.

Meet BB-8's Evil Twin in 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'

BB-8 is facing its dark side.

Robotics company Sphero unveiled a new "Star Wars" toy as part of #ForceFriday — and it's an "evil" version of the lovably cute droid from "The Force Awakens." The black and silver droid, called BB-9E, is used by the First Order and will appear in "The Last Jedi" this December.

Sphero created the BB-8 toy in 2015 and the specs on BB-9E are similar. The 4.4-inch app-controlled robot can roll, but unlike BB-8, can light up. The company is also launching a new R2-D2 toy.

Between BB-9E and the introduction of the porgs, adorably chubby penguin-like creatures, "The Last Jedi" may end up being the gosh-darn-cutest "Star Wars" movie ever.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" opens in theaters December 15.

Lake Bell Takes On Long Term Relationships In 'I Do...Until I Don't'

Screening Of Saban Films And DIRECTV's 'Shot Caller' - ArrivalsJust when you can't decide if Lake Bell's an actress who specializes in outrageous TV comedies like "Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later" and "Childrens Hospital," or intense film dramas like "Shot Caller" and "No Escape," she goes and switches it up on you yet again.

"In a World," Bell's first film as writer, director and star, earned heaps of critical praise and performed admirably at the box office when it was released in 2013. Now, the filmmaker is back behind the camera again with "I Do...Until I Don't," a lighthearted, screwball exploration of the feasibility of the institution of marriage in the modern day, through the prism of three couples.

Bell admits that, when she began work on the screenplay, she was skeptical of the viability of long-term commitment –- until she met her now-husband, and settled into a long-term relationship. This gave her new project even richer colors, as she reveals to Moviefone.

Moviefone: Are you now a recovered anti-romantic?

Lake Bell: Yeah, that's it –- I figured it out. My husband has everything to do with my faith in a committed relationship, and he is fearless and fierce about it. I started writing this movie before I even knew him, and with my very, sort of jaded point of view of a committed relationship.

So I just thought it was an archaic institution, and that marriage was something that was built around contracts and land partnerships and things like that. But, the movie is deeply personal for that reason. All of these characters are representing different parts of different relationships that have been meaningful in my life -- or have caused me to think and investigate my own relationship.

I feel very proud of the movie -- to put something out there that has a tremendous amount of hope. That's not a spoiler. Because I want people to know that going into it.

You have mentioned that it was like therapy for you to write this. I'm curious: what were some of the results of undergoing that therapy?

Well, I'm happily married! And I do think of this movie almost like chapter one to my investigation to adult relationships. This is me now, talking about it and in my life – and I'm fairly young in my marriage, but I've been a staunch observer of my parents' relationship and my friends, and all the relationships around me that are close. So it's natural that you would utilize those experiences and those rapports in writing. So that's the therapy aspect of it, I suppose.

As a writer and as a filmmaker, did you come into this with more confidence based on the response to your first film, "In a World?" Or was it almost like sometimes you have that like, "Oh, now I've got to live up to what I did before?"

I think it's a mix of both. The good news about the, "Oh, will I ever live up to 'In a World'" or whatever is I am an actor, right? So I have this job that I do and then I get to make movies over here in this other sort of universe. So I really kind of play in both, in two playgrounds.

And the other portion of this is that I'm a mom now. So it's like my level of being caught up in what people sort of think has diminished a little bit. Because I just care about being true to myself, so that my children see me realizing my dreams, and my children see that confidence and that belief in myself. And then keeping my kids healthy and happy. That's all that really matters, let's be honest.

I know that people always say this, but I really do care more about people just seeing the movie so that they can laugh, have a good time, and feel really good as they walk out. That's important to me, because I poured a lot of love into the movie, and I want to give that. That's my way of sharing. And same with "In A World" – it was kind-spirited, too. I feel like that's my job, to care about that more so than who is going to say negative things. I don't know – I gotta change poopy diapers, that's the poop that I'd like to submit myself to. I don't need more.

So it's like I'm not gonna seek out to get validation from people. But I think already the reception of this movie has been really kind. And I think people just need to laugh a little bit. They need to just feel a little love.

You entered into filmmaking at the sort of tipping point where finally women are getting to tell their stories on film. Tell me how you feel about that in general now, as opposed to when you made your first film. Do you feel things are gaining some momentum and traction and changing things the way things need to be changed? Or are we still way behind the curve?

I think both. Because I think that the thing I've really noticed in the past five years, for instance, is there really has been I think we are at the tipping point for female characters portrayed in their diversity and their versatility and the robustness of all these types of characters. I think that women are getting to play a lot of fun stuff.

That said, behind the scenes I think we have a long way to go. I think we're far away from the tipping point. But I think that "Wonder Woman" was and is a huge step forward. It's like at the end of the day in this town, money talks. We all know that. So the fact that it just is a wildly successful lucrative endeavor is just a huge stride for us.

And as a proud board member of Women in Film, I couldn't be more thrilled with how that went down. And I'm excited to see how that affects the studio system. It might not, but I think it will. I've always been so confused that people don't endorse more female filmmakers based on just a business standpoint, because if you just look at the demographics of the country there's more women.

TV is very friendly to filmmakers like yourself, inviting them in to create television shows. You certainly had success in the TV work that you've done as an actress. Are you interested in exploring that medium, given all the heat that's sort of on it and the exposure that it's getting right now?

All I can say is yes to that. And we'll see what happens with that. I think any medium or opportunity to kind of creatively express something with the support of a studio or producers in a way that feels productive is something that's of interest to me.

I agree that the television space is a place where you can have a lot of fun. And obviously the turn around is quicker and it still allows you to be able to write a movie on the side. There's something appealing about it. But, I'm still figuring it out.

How ambitious are you getting as far as the scope of the films that you want to make? Do you like the territory you've been in, or do you want to go bigger?

I have some bigger ones on the docket. Yeah, there's one that I'm writing, an original piece, that will take me a couple of years probably to get off the ground. But that one's bigger in scope, which is really fun. And I tend to do that: I want to take steps up and sometimes maybe I should jump a little bit further. Then there's a project that I'm re-writing and will direct soon that is much bigger in scope. So that's fun.

Are you like Orson Welles where you do the acting jobs to sort of fund your ability to make films?

Never been compared to Orson Welles but...

Glad to be the first one.

But a little bit. I think that doing my acting work is also part of my film school, because any time I get to arrive on a set and just say the words and do my job as an actor, it always provides an opportunity for me to be an observer again, and to observe another director and how they run their ship. And how he or she takes on different challenges. I always learn a lot.

Even Ric Waugh, who I was working with in "Shot Caller," I remember picking up something from him. Obviously he does very serious dramas, but he had a way of directing us where he would say, "Take your time, you don't have to rush through." Especially with me, in comedy, I tend to move, pace it up. And he said, "Let me edit you later. You don't have to pull in the reigns so much. It's okay." So he had to let me pull back and take the time to find things.

I learn from doing, from having different kinds of budgets and different limitations or different scenarios to depict. So it's really important that I continue my work as an actor just because it's part of my education.

'Bachelor in Paradise' Spoilers: Yep, That Couple Gets Engaged on Reunion Show

"Bachelor in Paradise" Season 4 had a condensed shooting schedule, with each episode s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g out the drama to ridiculous lengths, so it wasn't a shock to hear that it wouldn't end with an engagement. But! There will be a reunion show -- taped last night -- and one couple reportedly got engaged.

You can guess which one, right? Let's just say it's not Dean Unglert and Kristina or DLo.

It's Derek and Taylor.

Yep, according to Reality Steve, Derek Peth of "The Bachelorette" Season 12 and Taylor Nolan of "The Bachelor" Season 21 are now engaged.

Steve had said the finale reunion taping would be Wednesday, and he updated on Thursday with the big result:

That reunion special should also let fans know how the Dean love triangle is going -- last we heard he was still sort of dating both, spending a lot of time with DLo in Los Angeles, despite telling DLo that he loved Kristina.

Chris Harrison had previously explained to Entertainment Weekly that "The live [finale] at the end will be more like After the Final Rose where we're live, the show is wrapping up, and there will be people involved that were on the show because we have to find out where everybody is. [...] It's going to be a lot of finding out what's been happening because things have been continuing back in the real world since the show wrapped up in Mexico. It's going to be interesting and I think a lot more fun for all of us. It's going to have a live studio audience."

But it obviously won't be completely live if part was already taped last night. Also, this might be related to Mike Fleiss tweeting about "shocking news" regarding "The Bachelor." Should we expect that big announcement during the live show?

"Bachelor in Paradise" continues Monday at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Bachelor Nation Boss Teases 'Shocking News' Regarding 'The Bachelor'

THE BACHELOR - When Bachelorette Andi Dorfman said goodbye to Nick Viall just as he was preparing to pick out a ring for her, he was devastated. When Nick walked up to Kaitlyn Bristowe with an engagement ring in his pocket, only to be sent home, he was crushed. How could one man endure so much heartbreak? If you believe that “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” Nick Viall, 35, a technology salesman from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is back stronger than ever, ready and eager to begin his search for true love on the 21st season of ABC’s hit romance reality series “The Bachelor,” premiering on MONDAY, JANUARY 2 (8:00-10:01 p.m. EST), on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Craig Sjodin)CORRINE, RAVEN, SARAH, LAUREN, LACEY, SUSANNAH, ANGELA, DOMINIQUE, ALEXIS, ELIZABETH W., KRISTINA, OLIVIA, BRIANA, NICK VIALL, DANIELLE M., WHITNEY, JASMINE, JAIMI, IDA MARIE, VANESSA, TAYLOR, HAILEY, RACHEL, BRITTANY, ASTRID, CHRISTEN, JOSEPHINE, ELIZABETH "LIZ", MICHELLE, DANIELLE L., JASMINE G.Who will be "The Bachelor" for the 2018 Season 22? The show creator has some news on that front, and he teased that it will be "shocking."

Then again, it might just be Peter Kraus.

"Bachelorette" Rachel Lindsay didn't want Peter to be the new Bachelor, but Reality Steve claims Peter will be the guy anyway.

The 2018 season premieres in January, and Chris Harrison had said they'd wait for "Bachelor in Paradise" to run its course before naming the new guy. That led some fans to think we might see a Wells or a Ben Z. Bachelor. But no. Peter was apparently always the guy they wanted -- at least according to Reality Steve. And even though there was a questionable tweet from "Bachelor" boss Mike Fleiss that seemed to be about Peter, and an unnamed source telling People that Peter would never be the Bachelor, he will reportedly be the Season 22 Bachelor.

Fleiss tweeted a Bachelor tease on Aug. 30:

Would Peter as the Bachelor qualify as "shocking news"? Maybe after his own previous tweet. It could be a false lead, but on the same day, just before Fleiss' tweet, Reality Steve tweeted this: Fleiss tweeted about "shocking news" after that, so was he trying to confuse fans into thinking it won't be Peter, or getting ahead of the news in case people were confused by Peter as "The Bachelor"? Fleiss also added this random tweet, which may have nothing to do with his own Bachelor Nation, but still:

Just a random question, or...?

Anyway, Peter famously refused to propose to Rachel on "The Bachelorette" because he only wanted to propose once in life and he wasn't ready at that point to confirm that she was the one. He wanted her to pick him and just have them date in real life. Rachel and the show acted like this was preposterous and had never been done, but the show had done it themselves in early seasons. Many fans were fine with Peter's reasoning, but what will happen if he's The Bachelor? Would it be assumed that he would not propose? If he did propose, would he look like a hypocrite, or would it be perceived as a slight to Rachel -- that it was always about her not being the right one for him, not the short timeframe not being right for him?

Anyway, if there really is "shocking news" coming then maybe it has nothing to do with Peter and we are in for a Nick Viall-level twist. Let's just hope it's better than Nick as The Bachelor because we just saw how that turned out.

'Big Brother 19' Fans Want Matt Expelled Like Chima for Breaking Rules

When Matthew Clines is evicted from "Big Brother 19" tonight (Aug. 31), he probably won't even be booed, never mind expelled and refused a jury seat. BB reportedly doesn't allow live audience booing anymore (blame/thank Christine?) so even though Matt has been a disgrace as a houseguest, he'll still head to jury and eat more cereal, which is this most he's done this year.

What should happen is what happened to Chima Simone, also at Final 8, during "Big Brother 11." She broke a bunch of rules, mostly out of anger at what she saw as producers manipulating the game. It led her to be expelled, and not allowed on the jury. Her vote was given to the viewers, and viewers voted for the eventual winner Jordan Lloyd. (Yes, Chima destroyed her mic by throwing it in the jacuzzi, but the reasoning for expelling her was her repeated rule-breaking. Matt has been breaking the rules, and he's also a total flop as a player.)Matt has no qualms about producers manipulating the game. Not his issue. B19 seems designed for Paul Abrahamian to win, but both Matt and Raven Walton are more than fine with that. They love Paul and couldn't even imagine voting him out. They'd be happy to lose to him. HAPPY TO LOSE TO HIM. No, Matt is just pissed that Jason Dent went back on his word (welcome to "Big Brother"!) and Kevin Schlehuber gets to stay in the game.

BB19 has been an ugly, ugly season, with so many HGs showing despicable behavior. Matt wasn't really on that list until this week, mostly because he did nothing -- literally nothing -- all season, earning the nickname Mattress. He said his goal was to make jury, which he did, and help his showmance mate Raven get the $500,000. This week Matt and Raven have been fighting a bit, but Matt has saved his real anger for Jason and Kevin, getting in their faces.

That's all obnoxious, but not expulsion-worthy. However, Matt expressed his anger by deciding to blow-off the Have-Not rules. He's supposed to just eat slop and take cold showers and sleep in the Have-Not room, but instead he's eating whatever he wants (cereal, obv), taking hot showers, and sleeping wherever. Production called him out on it at first, then gave up. Matt knows the penalty is an automatic vote, and since he's leaving anyway, what does he care?

Fans are pissed, with past HGs calling out Matt's disrespect of the game, and #ExpelMatt working up support.

"Big Brother 19" airs its live eviction episode Thursdays at 9 p.m. The Sunday and Wednesday episodes air at 8 p.m. on CBS. Check out the live feeds to follow Paul's minions in real-time.

A Female 'Lord of the Flies' Movie Is Coming (Written by Men) & Twitter Isn't Pleased

It's like this idea was specifically designed to make Twitter even more savage than usual.

According to Deadline, Scott McGehee and David Siegel now have a deal with Warner Bros to write and direct a new adaptation of William Golding's novel "Lord Of The Flies," but this time the stranded students will be girls.

"We want to do a very faithful but contemporized adaptation of the book, but our idea was to do it with all girls rather than boys," Siegel told Deadline. "It is a timeless story that is especially relevant today, with the interpersonal conflicts and bullying, and the idea of children forming a society and replicating the behavior they saw in grownups before they were marooned."

McGehee added that the story is "aggressively suspenseful, and taking the opportunity to tell it in a way it hasn't been told before, with girls rather than boys, is that it shifts things in a way that might help people see the story anew. It breaks away from some of the conventions, the ways we think of boys and aggression. People still talk about the movie and the book from the standpoint of pure storytelling. It is a great adventure story, real entertainment, but it has a lot of meaning embedded in it as well. We've gotten to think about this awhile as the rights were worked out, and we're super eager to put pen to paper."

It's true that anyone who only pairs boys with aggression, bullying, or the mob mentality missed "Heathers," "Mean Girls," or just middle and high school in general. But many fans have argued that boys being boys is integral to the point of "Lord of the Flies." Also, two guys writing this all-girl adaptation doesn't really help sell the idea as a modern, relevant take.

Twitter was ready with knives:

Are you planning to wait and see on this idea or already giving it a hard pass? Hopefully this strong response isn't seen as a rejection of female-led stories, because that's not what the complaints are about. But Hollywood likes to interpret things in its own way.

'Game of Thrones' Wisely Cut a Finale Scene That Would've Spoiled Sansa's Surprise

Spoilers ahead from the "Game of Thrones" Season 7 finale.

That great "Game of Thrones" Season 7 finale plot twist almost had an awkward extra scene. Sure, it would've explained things a bit more, as HuffPost pointed out, but it also would've ruined Sansa Stark's mic drop trial twist. It also might've made her look worse -- like she really was considering killing her sister Arya Stark instead of purely reading Littlefinger for filth.

Petyr Baelish's ("humiliating") death scene was the result of all three Starks working together, and Bran actor Isaac Hempstead Wright revealed to HuffPost that Bran's role initially included a scene with Sansa using his vision powers to fact-check:

"Funny enough, we did actually shoot a scene that didn't make it into that episode where Sansa knocks on Bran's door, and I don't know whether they actually want to change the story, but as I understand it, Sansa came to Bran and goes, 'Can you just look some of this up before I kill my sister?' That kind of sentiment. Sansa just checking that fact."

It's a bit disappointing to think Sansa actually thought of killing Arya before Littlefinger. Better that they cut the scene completely to preserve Sansa's ambush of Lord Baelish. If we had known at that point that Sansa had already approached Bran for background, we'd know that Bran would tell her the truth about Baelish, and the trial scene would've been slightly less surprising. Still awesome, but less of a plot twist for the audience as well as Littlefinger.

Maybe that scene will be among the deleted scenes of the GoT Season 7 release, when it arrives on Blu-ray/DVD/Digital. Or they could just kill it with fire. We don't need it.

Trippy New 'American Horror Story: Cult' Preview Brings More Torment

It looks like "American Horror Story: Cult" is going to make us all coulrophobic.

The fear of clowns is a very real thing, and the upcoming season of the anthology series incorporates it to horrifying effect. The World Clown Association has been worried about the movie "It," but we suspect that "AHS: Cult" will be a problem for them, as well. Once you watch the latest preview, released Tuesday, you'll see why.

Full red noses, weapons, screams, and chants of "I want you," this preview takes scary clowns to the next level. The costumed men appear en masse and look like the last people you'd want at a child's birthday party, or anywhere else, for that matter. By the end, it seems they might just be a nightmare for Ally (Sarah Paulson), but even so, there does appear to be at least one mad clown on the loose for real.

"AHS: Cult" premieres Sept. 5 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.

'Game of Thrones' Director Explains Tyrion's Strange Sex Scene Reaction

The "Game of Thrones" Season 7 finale sex scene inspired a huge range of reactions -- from ew! to ooh! and beyond -- including among the show's characters.

There are Season 7 spoilers beyond this point!

It wasn't a huge shock to see Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) fall into bed together during the finale episode, but the development was certainly complicated by the fact that the sex scene came with confirmation that Jon is actually Dany's nephew Aegon Targaryen. Equally disturbing to many fans, however, was seeing Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) lurking outside in the hall as it happened. His troubled expression confused fans, sparking theories that he could be jealous or perhaps was secretly plotting with his sister, Cersei (Lena Headey). A particularly funny theory was that Tyrion picked up on the fact that there was incest going on after years of being exposed to it by his siblings.

Interesting as all those ideas are, Jeremy Podewsa, the director of the Season 7 finale, assured Mashable that Tyrion's reaction was more political in nature. As Hand, Tyrion's big concern was how this change in the queen's love life would affect her decision-making and his own position.

"Now Jon will more than likely have a larger role to play, and what kind of choices is Daenerys going to make now that she has changed the dynamic between her and Jon?" the director said, offering insight into Tyrion's concerns.

He added that for the youngest Lannister, "not being able to see what the future holds is a worry."

For his part, Dinklage called Daenerys and Jon's new relationship "dangerous for everybody involved" in a cast commentary video on the subject. He didn't clarify what exactly he meant, unfortunately, but he did offer an ominous hint.

"It's 'Game of Thrones,'" he said. "There's a long history of romance not ending well on this show."

Tyrion might not be jealous or planning to end Jon and Daenerys, but we're still worried about their future and (almost) everyone else's. For now, though, we're stuck waiting for "Game of Thrones" Season 8 to premiere in 2018 or even 2019.

'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Finale Renews Rumors of Rift Between 2 Stars

Rumors of a rift between two "Game of Thrones" stars won't go away, and the Season 7 finale didn't help.

In Season 7, Episode 7, "The Dragon and the Wolf," it looked like two characters who have long been rumored to be on the outs would appear in the same scene. (Spoiler ahead.) Bronn (Jerome Flynn) was headed to the Dragonpit alongside Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), where Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) and the rest of her entourage were due to gather. However, at the last minute, Bronn invited Podrick (Daniel Portman) to grab a drink with him, ducking out of the scene and fueling speculation that problems between Flynn and Headey persist, as the New York Post points out.

Rumors about possible tension between the two, who were once romantically linked, began in 2014, when a member of the "Game of Thrones" crew told the U.K.'s Telegraph that the two were not "on speaking terms" and were to "be kept apart at all costs." The Season 7 finale did nothing to discourage such rumblings; if anything, it reignited them.

However, while it is possible that Bronn's drink with Podrick was meant to separate Flynn and Headey, there is another alternative to consider. The Dragonpit scene was very crowded. Not only did it give us the anticipated meeting of Cersei and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), there were also multiple tense family reunions. As it was, showrunner D. B. Weiss admitted in the finale's "Inside the Episode" video that it was very difficult to shoot.

"We were in that Dragonpit for many, many days," he said. "It's a deceptively difficult thing to shoot, because there are so many different moments between different people."

It seems likely that Weiss and his co-showrunner, David Benioff, spared themselves additional logistical headaches by removing two characters from the scene. Perhaps Headey and Flynn's rumored feud was part of that decision, but perhaps not. We'll see if they shoot any scenes together in Season 8.

The final season of "Game of Thrones" is expected to premiere in 2018 or possibly as late as 2019.

'The Simpsons' Fires Longtime Composer Alf Clausen

2016 ASCAP Screen Music Awards - ArrivalsInsert a sad trombone sound here: "The Simpsons" has fired longtime composer Alf Clausen.

Clausen confirmed that he was let go from the veteran animated series, revealing in an interview with Variety that one of the show's producers, Richard Sakai, called him and said that the series was looking for "a different kind of music" for future episodes. According to Variety, Clausen's sudden dismissal was reportedly financially motivated.

The trade reports:

Speculation about Clausen's dismissal involves cost-cutting measures, which have been ongoing at "The Simpsons" in recent years, despite its massive profits for Fox and executive producer James L. Brooks' Gracie Films.

Clausen uses a 35-piece orchestra every week — something that "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening insisted upon from the start of the show. Including costs of musicians, recording studios, and orchestration, expenses routinely run into the millions of dollars per year.

It's unclear what the show's plan for its music will be going forward (don't worry: Danny Elfman's iconic theme song will remain), but Clausen's presence will certainly be missed: The composer had been with "The Simpsons" since 1990, scoring more than 560 episodes of the series and winning two Emmys (plus landing an additional 21 nominations) for his work on the show.

This isn't the first time that "The Simpsons" has been embroiled in a staffing controversy in recent years, with voice actor Harry Shearer (who performs as Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, and Principal Skinner, among many others) briefly quitting the series back in 2015 over claims that his contract would not allow him to do additional work outside of Springfield. The dispute was quickly resolved, and Shearer returned to the cast.

Season 29 of "The Simpsons" is set to premiere on Fox on October 1.

'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Writers Returning for Sequel

The sequel to Marvel and Sony's summer blockbuster "Spider-Man: Homecoming" will have a lot of familiar faces both in front of and behind the camera, with the first flick's writing team reportedly set to return for round two.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop that screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are in final negotiations to pen the screenplay for "Homecoming 2," after the re-rebooted Spider-Man property was a hit with both fans and critics alike earlier this year. As THR points out, "Homecoming" not only put Spidey (played by Tom Holland in this most recent iteration) squarely back in the MCU, but also redeemed the character's financial prospects after the dismal performance of the last reboot, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," which failed to connect with audiences and limped away from multiplexes a shell of the property's once-soaring early 2000s heights.

It makes sense, then, that Marvel and Sony are keen to keep the "Homecoming" gang together. In addition to McKenna and Sommers, Holland will be back, and director Jon Watts is also poised to sign on the dotted line again.

No word yet on when production on the Spidey sequel will get underway, but the flick already has a release date: It's due in theaters on July 5, 2019.

Blake Lively Had Quit Acting Before Landing 'Gossip Girl'

American Ballet Theatre Spring 2017 GalaAs signature CW series "Gossip Girl" gears up for its 10th anniversary next month, its creators and stars are looking back on the show's beginnings. And according to the biggest name to emerge from the series, she almost missed out on the experience entirely.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Blake Lively revealed that she had quit acting at the time she was approached to play Serena van der Woodsen on "GG." As Lively explained, she was burnt out on Hollywood, and wanted to get out of the industry and enroll in college instead.

"I realized that [acting] was a business as much as a craft," the actress told Vanity Fair."People will go see your movie based on your standing and all of that, and it didn't make sense to me because I was 18 and being an artist."

But "Gossip Girl" co-creator Josh Schwartz, fresh off the success of fellow aspirational teen soap "The O.C.," knew he wanted Lively to play Serena, and essentially refused her refusal when she was approached about the part.

"I said, 'No, I want to go to college. Thank you, though,'" Lively recalled. "Then they said, 'O.K., you can go to Columbia [University] one day a week. After the first year [of the show], it'll quiet down. Your life will go back to normal and you can start going to school. We can't put it in writing, but we promise you can go.' So that's why I said, 'O.K. You know what? I'll do this.'"

The rest, as they say, is history: "Gossip Girl" blew up, Lively became a big star, and though she never did attend college, it seems like things worked out okay for the actress. So much so, in fact, that the star says she'd be open to starring in a "GG" reboot/revival, should the right story materialize.

"I'm open to anything that's good, that's interesting, and that sort of feels necessary," she told Vanity Fair. " ... [W]e all owe so much to this show, and I think that it would be silly not to acknowledge that."

Stephen King Put a Red Balloon in His Window in Honor of 'It'

Stephen King is either really excited about the upcoming big screen adaptation of his classic horror novel "It," or he's trying to tell fans that he's actually Pennywise the evil clown in disguise. Either way, the author recently put a red balloon in the window of his house, and fans and local media couldn't help but notice the significant decorating choice.

Several news outlets reported this week that King had quietly stuck a crimson-colored balloon in one of the front windows of his Bangor, Maine home, just over a week before the release of "It." In King's 1986 book, the seemingly innocent decoration is actually a calling card of the monstrous Pennywise -- a killer clown with a particular appetite for kids -- and naturally, is a chill-inducing sight for those familiar with the iconography.

King's decision to prominently display the balloon is likely nothing more than the writer's own form of viral marketing. But maybe small children should stay away from his house for the time being, just in case. We're not saying Stephen King is secretly an evil clown -- but we're not not saying it, either.

"It" is due in theaters on September 8.

'Law & Order: SVU' Is Doing a Charlottesville Riot Episode

Law & Order SVU"Law & Order: SVU" is continuing its tradition of "ripped from the headlines" stories: Among the real-life issues it will tackle in Season 19 are the recent Charlottesville riots and a cyber-bullying episode that will be "our answer to '13 Reasons Why'."

Showrunner Michael Chernuchin tells The Hollywood Reporter why the August 11 clash in Charlottesville between white supremacists and counter-protestors will make a good SVU ep: "Conflict. It's just the state of the world today with everybody. Everybody's political now and everything is political now and we want to deal with that."

The show typically deals with "special victims," that is, children, vulnerable elders, or victims of sexual assault. James Fields, who was arrested for the fatal vehicular attack on 32-year-old protestor Heather Hayer, had previously been arrested for domestic abuse, so perhaps the episode will explore the fact that many mass murderers have a history of domestic violence.

Last season included the episode "Real Fake News," in which a congressman was falsely accused of running a child sex ring. But not every timely political story sees the light of the day. The Season 18 episode with Gary Cole as a Trump-like politician who is accused of assaulting multiple women was never aired.

Chernuchin says that doesn't mean they're done with controversial episodes: "I'm going to present both political views and let the audience decide which one is right. ... at the end of every episode, I want half the audience to throw their shoes at the television and the other half to stand up and cheer."

Per THR, the other topics the show will tackle this season include cat-fishing, cyber bullying -– which Chernuchin describes as "our answer to '13 Reasons Why'" -- and an episode inspired by the violent removal of Dr. David Dao from an overbooked United flight.

Another episode will be based on the battle over British infant Charlie Gard. His life and death struggle became news around the world as his parents clashed with medical experts over an experimental treatment.

"Law & Order: SVU" returns Wednesday, September 27 on NBC.

Get Your First Look at Misty Knight's Bionic Arm on 'Luke Cage'

Misty KnightMisty Knight (Simone Missick) gets a major upgrade in Season 2 of "Marvel's Luke Cage."

The character, who [SPOILER] lost an arm in a battle with villain Bakuto (Ramón Rodríguez) in Marvel's "The Defenders," is getting a bionic arm, just like in the comics.

EW has an exclusive photo of Knight ready for action with her new prosthetic arm, side by side with Cage (Mike Colter).

Missick shared the photo on Twitter calling her "Misty Knight 2.0" and the hashtags #MistySoLit and #BionicBae.

In the comics, Tony Stark designs her new arm, which was lost in a bombing. It offers her not only superhuman strength, but impressive new powers including generating energy blasts and gravity fields, but the ability to control robots. Sweet.

Marvel's "Luke Cage" returns in 2018 on Netflix.

'The Walking Dead' Announces 'Pokemon-Go' Type Interactive Game

The Walking Dead: Our WorldWant to slay walkers at the gym or your local park? AMC announced yesterday that it's launching an augmented reality location-based game called "The Walking Dead: Our World" that will let you do just that.

The game will be something like "Pokemon Go," in which players catch various Pokemon characters that pop up on your phone, depending on your location.

In the promo video for the upcoming app, we see people going about their everyday lives when they pick up their phone and are suddenly immersed in the post-apocalyptic world of "The Walking Dead," with walkers everywhere.

Although showing a hospital employee in scrubs imagining throwing a grenade into a room full of walkers (after walking past a shuffling old man in real life) might not be the best scenario for playing the game.

It looks like you'll be able to pick up available weapons, including a katana sword like the one Michonne uses and an MP5K rifle. And Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon and Michonne might show up to help you fight.

The game, created with Finnish games developer Next Game, will first launch on iPhone and iPad and then later on Android devices. No release date has yet been announced

Next Game previously created "The Walking Dead: No Man's Land," a mobile game where players collect characters to take on locations. It's been downloaded more than 16 million times.

Season 8 of "The Walking Dead" premieres on October 22.

Sandra Bullock Donates $1 Million to Hurricane Harvey Relief

Sandra BullockSandra Bullock just donated $1 million to victims of Hurricane Harvey. A rep for Red Cross confirmed the star's generous donation by saying, "This is an incredible gift. We're so thankful." She's one of many celebs vowing to help the people of Texas, including Kevin Hart and Ellen Degeneres.

"It's times like this when we do receive such an incredible amount of support. Especially during times of disaster, people see what's happening in Texas and our hearts all go out to them," Elizabeth Penniman, Vice President of Communications for American Red Cross national headquarters, told People. "Having someone like Sandra Bullock make this kind of commitment, it helps bring people together and open their hearts and be even more generous."

Bullock, who has a home in Austin, Texas, is encouraging others to help out as they can. "There are no politics in eight feet of water. There are human beings in eight feet of water." She added, "I'm just grateful I can do it. We all have to do our part."

The star, who also helped rebuild a New Orleans high school after Hurricane Katrina, was honored in 2013 with the first-ever People's Choice Award for Favorite Humanitarian. She has reportedly given more than $5 million to the Red Cross over the years.

Among the other stars stepping up to help in the wake of Hurricane Harvey:
