The announcement was made by Leslie Moonves, the President and CEO of the CBS Corporation, and Nina Tessler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment, coming on the heels of the April 3rd announcement by Letterman that he would step down in 2015. While many have been floated for the position, Colbert was always a favorite, especially considering that the move will be relatively seamless since CBS and Comedy Central, the current home to "The Colbert Report," are owned by the same company.
It'll be interesting to see how Colbert performs free of his "Colbert" persona. As "safe" a choice as it might seem, there's an air of unpredictability to the announcement as well, since we have no idea what a "straight" Colbert show will be like.
Start your wild speculation now.
