Jimmy Kimmel Told People 'Godzilla' Was a True Story and They Believed Him

Believe it or not, there are a few people who think Godzilla is real -- and to our horror/delight, they were willing to talk about it on TV.



As part of his ongoing Lie Witness News series, Jimmy Kimmel deployed a street team to ask people a ridiculous question, and this time it centered on the big green guy of the moment. Kimmel said that in honor of "Godzilla" raking in $93 million on its opening weekend, he posed this query: "Considering 'Godzilla' is based on the true story of the giant lizard attack on Tokyo that killed more than 100,000 people in 1954, do you think it is wrong that Hollywood glamorizes this event for entertainment?"



"I will admit, not too many people bit on this one," Kimmel remarked, before gleefully adding, "but some of them did."



And oh, how they did. While a couple responders, to their credit, seemed skeptical about the veracity of the question, others dove headfirst into long-winded answers that are cringe-inducingly awkward.



One woman called the "real" Godzilla attack "a travesty" and said that the movie was "disrespectful" to those who were affected. Another said she would support Congress authorizing $600 million in funding for the Navy's "anti-reptile capabilities" to do "anything we can ... to protect our nation."



A young man who also professed his belief in the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot said he thought Godzilla and other creatures like him were the result of global warming.



"There's so many mysteries under the sea," he said.
