Will There Be a Third 'Finding Nemo' Movie? Director Weighs In

"Finding Dory" isn't technically "Finding Nemo 2," but it's totally "Finding Nemo 2." So will there be a "Finding Nemo 3"?

"Dory" is swimming in box office glory as you read this, breaking records and proving there was most definitely a market for this spinoff, 13 years after the original. But box office success doesn't always lead to sequel plans, or it wouldn't have taken so long for "Finding Nemo" to get this treatment. Director/writer talked to Entertainment Weekly about the process, saying there was initially "zero discussion of a sequel" to "Nemo," and he doesn't like the idea of sequels unless the story demands it.

So here's what Andrew Stanton said when EW asked him about the possibility of a third movie in this series:

"I really do feel like this was the missing piece, emotionally, for the first movie. Now, I've stopped saying never for anything because there are a lot of new characters that get introduced and we've broadened the universe for this movie. And again, I'm very used to seeing that world continue to open up from the 'Toy Story' movies... so I've learned to just say, to my knowledge, I think everything that was born of the first movie is wrapped up. But we'll see."

So the door isn't closed, but it's not wide open with a plan in place. Basically, he doesn't want to mess with a good thing, just or the sake of money or pleasing fans who can't get enough of this world. As he added to EW, "With any of the other sequels, we strive to try and make it seem like it was inevitable, like it was meant to be, that all these extended stories and journeys with these characters were part of the whole canon." He feels like they accomplished that with "Dory," but that doesn't mean it would make sense to do it again.

But if you can come up with a pitch that sounds inevitable and preordained, then maybe they will go back for more. "Finding Squirt," anyone?
