'Galaxy Quest' TV Series Back on Track With New Writer

The TV series based on sci-fi cult classic "Galaxy Quest" is back on track with comedian Paul Scheer ("The League") writing.

The TV version of the 1999 fan fave has been in the works since 2015, but was sidelined by the death of Alan Rickman in 2016. It's not clear whether original stars Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, or Daryl Mitchell will be part of the new series.

With the cancellation of his ABC series "Last Man Standing," Allen might be available. Same with Shalhoub, whose CBS political satire "BrainDead" lasted only one season. Weaver is currently appearing on "The Defenders."

Scheer is replacing Robert Gordon, who co-wrote the film's screenplay and was originally slated to write the series as well.

"Without giving much away, I don't think there has ever been a better time to continue the 'Galaxy Quest' story with the explosion and popularity of sci-fi films in recent years," Scheer told Deadline. "To be able to create and be a part of this world is just mind-blowing, and I'm approaching this truly as what I'd like to see as a fan."

Scheer, currently appears on ABC's "Fresh Off The Boat" guest-starred on HBO's "Veep." His writing credits include "The League" and "Childrens Hospital."
