The CW Developing 'Riverdale' Spinoff With Dark Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Sabrina the Teenage Witch is turning to the dark side.

The CW is developing a spinoff of "Riverdale," its dark take on the Archie comics, and it would take its story from "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" (which was written by "Riverdale" showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa).

The network says the show "reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of 'Rosemary's Baby' and 'The Exorcist,' this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit."

That sounds decidedly different than the sunny, sitcom version of "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" that starred Melissa Joan Hart and ran first on ABC from 1996-2000 and then on the WB from 2000-2003.

The project is being developed for the 2018-2019 television season
