Tom Hanks Is Back as David S. Pumpkins in Animated TV Special

david s. pumpkins, animated special, tom hanks, nbc, halloweenDavid S. Pumpkins is one of the weirder "Saturday Night Live" characters to go viral in recent years, and now, he's set to take the spotlight once more: NBC has just announced that it will air "The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special" next month.

The animated program will feature the voice of Tom Hanks, who'll reprise the titular role he originated in a sketch from the October 22, 2016 episode of "SNL." In the sketch, "Haunted Elevator," a group moves through a haunted house-style elevator ride, with spooky characters -- and then, inexplicably, the odd, not-so-scary David S. Pumpkins -- popping out on every floor.

The silly character, flanked by dancing skeletons played by "SNL" cast members Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan, was an instant sensation, and inspired NBC to give him another turn in the limelight.

"It's scary how quickly the original 'SNL' sketch caught on, and we're thrilled that Tom Hanks is back to keep the fun going," said George Cheeks, president of business operations and late night programming for NBC Entertainment and Universal Television, in a statement.

Here's the synopsis, per Variety:

Set in a small suburban town on All Hallows' Eve, the special centers on David Pumpkins and his skeleton sidekicks who show a young boy and his sister the true meaning of Halloween, answering none of their questions along the way.

In addition to Hanks, "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage will also lend his voice to the special. Day and Moynihan will reprise their roles, and "SNL" writer Streeter Seidell (who co-created the sketch with Day and Moynihan) will also play a part.

"The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special" airs on NBC on October 28 at 11:30 p.m.
