First 'Foxcatcher' Teaser Is Eerie and Odd (VIDEO)

foxcatcher teaser trailerDirector Bennett Miller has had unparalleled success turning true stories into utterly compelling cinema. With both "Capote" and "Moneyball," tales of obsession and shifting the paradigms (of baseball and what constitutes true crime, respectively). Well, it looks like Miller's winning streak will continue with this fall's "Foxcatcher," which just premiered at Cannes to mostly rapturous reviews. And now that the first trailer has dropped, you can weigh in on it too (French accent optional).

"Foxcatcher" tells the story of John du Pont (a nearly unrecognizable Steve Carell), the millionaire paranoid schizophrenic who killed Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo), an Olympic gold metal-winner in wrestling. The movie seems to be framed through the relationship du Pont had with Dave's brother Mark (Channing Tatum), who went on to win the gold after this tragic event.

Anyone who was around when this happens can attest to how bizarre and unsettling the crime was, with du Pont locking himself inside his mansion for several days while negotiating with police for his release into custody. Everything about this was really weird and disturbing, and from the looks of it, Miller, with his typically understated style, seems to have captured it all without the need to sensationalize or embellish. Also, should we just hand Carell an Oscar ahead of time? Or do we have to wait another 10 months to do that?

Watch the trailer for the film below, which is currently in competition for the Palme d'Or and, from the sound of the reactions today, has a pretty good shot. For the rest of us, it will be out on November 14th, just in time for a big time Academy Awards push.
