Bill Maher Will Return to 'Real Time' After N-Word Apology

US-ENTERTAINMENT-FILM-OSCARSIt's business as usual for HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" this Friday, after the star and network both issued statements on Maher's "completely inexcusable and tasteless" n-word quip.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Maher will still be hosting this Friday, but his planned guest Senator Al Franken canceled his appearance, saying he believed "what Bill Maher said was inappropriate and offensive," so he decided not to go on the show.

Maher got in hot water when talking with Republican Senator Ben Sasse, who was promoting his book, "The Vanishing American Adult." The conversation turned to how adults dressing up for Halloween is frowned upon in his state of Nebraska. Maher said he had to get to the state more, and Sasse replied, "We'd love to have you work in the fields with us." Maher then decided, for whatever reason, to respond by saying, "Work in the fields? Senator, I'm a house n—-r."

Here's the clip:

HBO reacted with a statement, posted on Saturday:

"Bill Maher's comment last night was completely inexcusable and tasteless. We are removing his deeply offensive comment from any subsequent airings of the show."

Maher also issued his own statement of regret:

"Friday nights are always my worst night of sleep because I'm up reflecting on the things I should or shouldn't have said on my live show. Last night was a particularly long night as I regret the word I used in the banter of a live moment. The word was offensive and I regret saying it and am very sorry."

"Real Time" is currently in its 15th season. Episode 18 airs live Friday, June 9 at 10 p.m. on HBO.
