molly ringwald jem and the holograms movieTalk about 1980s star power. After adding Juliette Lewis to the cast, "Jem and the Holograms" has also secured Molly Ringwald for a role in the live action adaptation of the classic animated series.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Ringwald is joining the "Jem" ensemble in a yet-to-be-disclosed role. She'll star alongside Aubrey Peeples ("Nashville"), who's playing Jerrica Benton, a.k.a. Jem, and Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, and Hayley Kiyoko, who round out the rest of Jem's band, the Holograms. Ryan Guzman is playing Rio, a love interest for Jem.

While the original cartoon was set in the '80s (the series ran from 1985-1988), this film version is being described as a modern take on "Jem," which will focus on the titular character's search for her mother, and a musical-themed adventure through Los Angeles. The film is already shooting in L.A.

Jon M. Chu is directing, and Ryan Landels is penning the screenplay. A release strategy has yet to be determined.
