While in London for the premiere of "Rogue Nation," Cruise addressed the "Top Gun 2" talk with Reuters:
However, he does have a specific demand:It would be fun. I would like to get back into those jets."
There's the Maverick we know and love!It would have to be practical. I don't want any CGI jets. I want to shoot it like how we shot the first one."
Last month, Skydance CEO David Ellison talked to Collider about "Top Gun 2," and it sounds like he and Cruise may have already had that no-CGI conversation:
OK, but safety first. Don't kill the guy just 'cause he has a need for "practical" speed. In terms of the plot, Ellison had teased, "It is very much a world we live in today, where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we're actually going to produce. So it's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today. [Those] are all fun things that we're gonna get to dive into in this movie."...Absolutely, I think this is a movie that should be in 3-D and in IMAX, and again something that you can shoot practically. As everyone knows with Tom, he is 100% going to want to be in those airplanes shooting it practically..."
It does sound like it might be fun to both make and watch. We'll have the easy part on the sidelines, whenever this thing finally arrives in theaters.
