What's New on TV, Netflix, Digital Rental, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: July 27-August 2

New on DVD and Blu-ray

"Home"
Oh (voiced by Jim Parsons), an alien on the run from his own people, lands on Earth and makes friends with the adventurous Tip (Rihanna), who is on a quest of her own, in this DreamWorks Animation family film. If you bring "Home" into your home, it'll bring a ton of extras with it. The DVD and Blu-ray editions both include long lists of special features, with the Blu-ray offering a cute new animated short created for the home entertainment release called "This is Being Boov."

"The Water Diviner"
Russell Crowe both stars and makes his directorial debut in this drama about an Australian farmer who goes in search of this three missing sons, last known to have been part of the Battle of Gallipoli. The Blu-ray edition features "The Making of The Water Diviner" and "The Battle of Gallipoli."

"Comet"
Justin Long and Emmy Rossum play star-crossed lovers who meet by chance during a meteor shower, then see their relationship blossom and wither over the course of six years. It's more ambitious than the usual romantic dramedy, but it's up to you to decide if those ambitions were successful.

New on Netflix

"Turbo F.A.S.T."
Season 2 of the Netflix animated series -- which picks up from the 2013 movie -- will launch its six new episodes on July 31. Turbo the speedy snail returns with his posse of adrenaline junkies to form the Fast Action Stunt Team. "With their tricked-out shells in tow, the team attempts outrageous stunts, races on the coolest tracks and takes on the craziest challengers, including masked Mexican lizards, surfer cockroaches and giant Sumo snails." Sounds awesome!

"Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp"
It's here! All eight episodes of Netflix's original series -- a prequel to the movie that came out in 2001 -- will be available for binge-watching on July 31. If you've forgotten why you absolutely have to watch this, here's another look at the star-studded trailer:

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only

"Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Innocence)" (HBO NOW)
This year's Oscar winner for Best Picture, Best Director, Original Screenplay and Cinematography is available via HBO NOW starting August 1. Watch what all the hype was about as a washed-up actor (Michael Keaton) famous for his role as superhero Birdman struggles to put on a Broadway play. The amazing cast includes Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts.

"The Skeleton Twins" (Amazon Prime)
Kristen Wiig is one of the stars of Netflix's "First Day of Camp," but this critically acclaimed dramedy with Bill Hader is coming to Amazon Prime on the same day (July 31). The former SNL stars play twins who have an unexpected reunion after they both experience near-tragedies.

"Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (But Were Afraid to Ask)" (Hulu)
Woody Allen's 1972 comedy is making its way to Hulu on August 1. Lynn Redgrave, Gene Wilder, Louise Lasser, John Carradine, Burt Reynolds, Tony Randall, the director himself, and even Regin Philbin star in a series of seven vignettes loosely inspired by the book of the same name. Just to give you an idea, there's a sketch called "What Is Sodomy?" starring Gene Wilder as a psychiatrist who falls in love with a sheep. Here's a portion of that story:
TV Worth Watching

"The Bachelorette" (Monday on ABC at 8 p.m.)
Kaitlyn's "dramatic" finale airs tonight (July 27), revealing whether she picked Shawn, Nick, or (best option) just herself. This will be followed by the always just as "dramatic" "After the Final Rose" special. The finale will also feature a sneak peek of the even more "dramatic" "Bachelor in Paradise," which premieres August 2.

"Key & Peele" (Wednesday on Comedy Central at 10 p.m.)
Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele continue their strong fifth (and, sadly, final) season with Episode 4, "Severed Head Showcase." This week, Comedy Central says, "A gospel group must practice without their coach, a group of warriors celebrate a beheading, a prisoner tries to trick his guard, and a young man is confronted for only speaking in catchphrases." Don't let him get away with it!

"Humans" (Sunday on AMC at 9 p.m.)
It's not too late to catch up on AMC's new sci-fi series set in a parallel present London where synths -- eerily humanlike androids -- are the latest trend in household help. Episode 6 of 8 airs on August 2, and you can expect more family drama, more secrets to be revealed, and maybe even a few answers on Mia.
