'House of Cards' Will Return for Shortened Final Season Without Kevin Spacey

After Kevin Spacey was fired from Netflix series "House of Cards" following mounting accusations of sexual assault and harassment, the future of the series was called into question. Now, the streaming service has revealed that it does indeed plan to give the show a proper send-off -- without its iconic leading man.

It had previously been announced that "House of Cards" would end after its upcoming sixth season, and that is still the plan, according to Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos, who discussed the series during an appearance at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York on Monday. Sarandos said that he had been working with production company Media Rights Capital (MRC) to figure out how -- or if -- the show should move forward in the wake of the Spacey scandal, and all parties finally came to a decision on how best to wrap the series.

"It'll be an eight episode season that'll start production early '18, and it will not involve Kevin Spacey," Sarandos announced on Monday. "It will star Robin Wright. And we're really excited about bringing some closure to the show for fans."

According to the Netflix exec, it was also important to bring some closure to the crew that works on the series, which shoots in Baltimore and employs hundreds of locals. Production had already begun on season six when the Spacey scandal broke, and shut down indefinitely while Netflix and MRC hashed out an end game.

Variety reports that one way the show may explain Spacey's absence is to kill off his character, Frank Underwood. Sarandos didn't divulge any details about how the show will handle its star's exit, so fans will have to wait and see for themselves what happens.

There's no word yet on when season six of "House of Cards" will premiere. Production will resume early next year.
