See 'Game of Thrones'' George R.R. Martin's 'Sharknado 3' Surprise

Playboy And A&E's The "Sharknado" flicks have become synonymous with cameos from C-, D-, and all the way down to Z-list celebrities, but one slightly-more-familiar face popped up in "Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!"

In a quick cameo, "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin was impaled by -- and had his head bitten off by -- a shark that crashed into the theater where he was watching a shark monster movie (how meta). It's a short but satisfyingly-gory scene that also probably gave some "A Song of Ice and Fire" fans pause, since Martin is a notoriously slow writer, and readers eager for him to finish the series have been waiting for years for the next arrival (and worry that he may not live long enough to wrap it up himself).

"Sharknado" director Anthony C. Ferrante played into that fear with Martin's scene, telling The Hollywood Reporter that that was the exact reaction he had hoped for.

"I love the fact that we're going to piss off all the 'Game of Thrones' fans," Ferrante told THR. "Instead of writing his damned book, he was busy hanging out with us, filming a scene for 'Sharknado 3!'"

Ferrante also said that unlike some of the other high-profile cameos (we're looking at you, Mr. President and Madame Vice President), he wanted to keep Martin's involement under wraps, and went to Martin's home in New Mexico specifically to film his scene. That shoot provided some fun fodder for the film's home video release.

"He originally had a line - and we'll add it back in for the DVD - where he went outside, shivered, and said, 'Winter's coming,'" Ferrante explained. "But we thought about it and decided that we wanted people to watch it and go, 'Wait, is that ... Is that George R.R. Martin?'"

Mission accomplished. Check out a GIF of Martin's grisly death below.
