'Arrow' to Honor Billy Joel in a Strange Way

Billy Joel In Concert - New York, New YorkAn upcoming "Arrow" episode will pay homage to Billy Joel in quite the unusual way.

One of the CW series' executive producers, Marc Guggenheim, is a big fan of the Grammy-winning musician, and because of this, the show will give Joel a dubious honor. When the villainous Cayden (Michael Emerson) decides to blow up a concert venue in an upcoming episode, it will be the Piano Man's show that he targets.

"We wanted Cayden James to threaten a major event at Star City," Guggenheim told EW. "A variety of ideas were discussed, but when we settled on a rock concert, I knew it had to be Billy Joel."

Although some performers might be put off by their name being attached to the fictional threat -- especially given recent terrorist attacks -- Joel apparently didn't mind. In fact, he gave Guggenheim permission when the producer reached out to him. Given how excited Guggenheim was about the idea, though, it would have been hard to say no. The producer shared that he's been a Joel fan since he was 7.

"He's always been an inspiration to me, personally and artistically," Guggenheim said. "I told him as much when I wrote to him to ask for his permission to use his concert footage in our episode and when he agreed, it was one of the happiest days of my career."

Probably no one will be happier than Guggenheim when Joel's "No Man's Land" plays in the episode.

"Arrow" airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
