'The Good Doctor' Has a 'Controversial' Exit Fueling Big Midseason Storyline

THE GOOD DOCTOR - "Mount Rushmore" - Dr. Shaun Murphy's attention to detail complicates his first day at St. Bonaventure Hospital. Meanwhile, Dr. Claire Browne learns a valuable lesson about honesty when confronted with a difficult diagnosis for her patient. "The Good Doctor" airs MONDAY, OCTOBER 2 (10:01-11:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. (ABC/Eike Schroter)NICHOLAS GONZALEZ, FREDDIE HIGHMORE, ANTONIA THOMAS, CHUKU MODU, ROCKY ANDERSONWhich one of "The Good Doctor" doctors is leaving? And will they stay gone?

Actor Freddie Highmore's ABC show has been very popular with viewers, earning strong ratings and a full 18-episode pickup for Season 1. A fan asked TVLine about the show, leading into a mini spoiler about a major storyline for midseason:

Question: I'm loving The Good Doctor. Given that it is a David Shore show, is there any chance any House characters might at some point pop in for a cameo? —Matt
Ausiello: I doubt we'll see any characters from House, since Universal owns those, but I would not be surprised at all if an actor from the original show were to check in at some point. (Robert Sean Leonard would fit in nicely at San Jose St. Bonaventure, no?) In the meantime, I hear one of the rookie hit's full-time docs will be checking out in the near future, and his/her controversial onscreen exit — which may or may not stick — will set the stage for a big midseason storyline.

First of all, 100 percent agree about Robert Sean Leonard (who played Wilson on "House"). He improves everything he touches. Moving on to the "controversial on-screen exit," though. Who? And why is it controversial, and what do they mean it "may or may not stick"? Like, dead or not dead stick? Fired or rehired stick? Very curious.

(The URL for TVLine's spoiler roundup includes the word "fired" which may be a hint.)

It looks like the midseason finale may be Episode 10, "Sacrifice" (!) airing December 4. For now, we'll stay worried for all of the doctors, including Highmore's Dr. Shaun Murphy, but also Dr. Neil Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez), Dr. Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas), Dr. Marcus Andrews (Hill Harper), Dr. Jared Kalu (Chuku Modu), Dr. Sarah Chen (Irene Keng), and Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff).

"The Good Doctor" airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
