'Suits' Planned Meghan Markle's Exit a Year Ago, As Her Royal Romance Was 'Burgeoning'

Although fans only got confirmation Tuesday that Meghan Markle is leaving the series in the wake of her engagement to Prince Harry, the show was prepared for that eventuality. "Suits" creator Aaron Korsh told the BBC's Radio 4 program "Today" that he and the writers saw the "burgeoning" relationship and proceeded as if she'd exit the series.

"We decided to take a gamble that these two people were in love and it was going to work out," he said.

Interestingly, it sounds like they didn't consult with Markle before making the call. Korsh said that he "didn't want to intrude," which was really very polite. Instead, they proceeded as if she'd leave, thinking it would be "easier to undo it" than it would be to lose her longstanding character, Rachel, without preparing for her exit.

"What we decided to do [was to] say, 'Look, I would rather have good things happen to Meghan in her life,'" Korsh said.

As we know now, those good things are indeed happening. Markle and Prince Harry are set to wed in May in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle -- with the enthusiastic blessing of her former "Suits" co-workers.
