'Lady Bird' Named Best Picture by New York Film Critics Circle

The New York Film Critics Circle met on Thursday to vote on honorees for the best films of 2017, selecting "Lady Bird" as the top picture of the year.

The flick, the directorial debut of writer-actress Greta Gerwig, has been riding a wave of good buzz lately, picking up early prizes from the National Board of Review, among other prestigious awards season accolades. (Not to mention its new spot as the best reviewed movie of all time on Rotten Tomatoes.) In addition to its Best Picture prize, the NYFCC also awarded the Best Actress statuette to star Saoirse Ronan, who plays the titular teen.

It seems like a safe bet that "Lady Bird" will have a good shot at some nods come Oscar time, and that's also true of another NYFCC winner: Tiffany Haddish. The breakout star of "Girls Trip" was the surprise winner in the Best Supporting Actress category, beating out Ronan's "Lady Bird" costar Laurie Metcalf for the honor. Haddish appears to be poised for a Melissa McCarthy-in-"Bridesmaids"-style run through this awards season, and could be well on her way to an Academy Award nomination come January.
