In "3 Days to Kill," the latest action flick from director McG, Kevin Costner plays a spy who's trying to get out of the game to spend more time with his wife and daughter (played by Connie Nielsen and Hailee Steinfeld, respectively). But as the movie's new trailer proves, leaving the spy business isn't exactly simple.
Costner's agent character, Ethan, swears he's done with his old life, only to mysteriously fall ill. Enter his handler (Amber Heard), who just so happens to have a miracle cure -- that she'll give him only if he promises to complete one final three-day, murder-filled mission.
"So I buy back my life by killing for you?" asks a skeptical Ethan. Of course, he agrees.
The rest of the clip is a mash-up of frenetic action and family drama, splicing shots of Ethan kicking ass and giving chase next to scenes like the one with his wary daughter asking why there's noise coming from the car trunk where Ethan's stashed a hostage. It all seems like familiar territory, though the proceedings could be elevated by the relative talent of the ensemble and McG's flair for balancing action with humor.
Time will tell. "3 Days to Kill" opens February 14, 2014.
