"Frozen," the latest animated tale from Disney, is still rocking the box office, so it makes sense that the Mouse House would want to add another female-centric flick to its upcoming roster of films. The studio is doing just that in 2018, when it plans to release "Moana."
"Moana" (pronounced Mo-AH-na) focuses on the titular girl, who the official synopsis describes as "a sea-voyaging enthusiast, and the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators." It goes on: "When her family needs her help, she sets off on an epic journey. The film will also include demigods and spirits taken from real mythology."
The movie will be co-directed by longtime Disney cohorts John Musker and Ron Clement, who worked together on some of the studio's most iconic animated titles, including "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," and the more recent "The Princess and the Frog." Indiewire describes "Moana" as a "Polynesian musical," and in September, Musker confirmed that song would play a crucial role in the movie, telling the site that "animation and music go along together."
While initial reports speculated that "Moana" could be illustrated in a 2D/3D combo-style animation, akin to 2012 Oscar-winning short "Paperman," Musker told Indiewire that technology just wasn't advanced enough to apply that style to a feature-length film yet. Still, with Musker and Clement's pedigree behind it, the movie should look good no matter what form of animation it adopts.
"Moana" doesn't have a specific release date yet. Still, 2018 can't come soon enough.
