"Election," Alexander Payne
This movie is quietly perfect. It's about large global issues, but seen through the eyes of a high school in Iowa. It's laugh-out-loud funny and beautifully crafted with practical narration from multiple characters. It's one of my all-time favorite movies.
"Idiocracy," Mike Judge
This movie is the "Dr. Strangelove of our times. Unfortunately, it never got the wide release it deserved. Amazing to see a film that's so smart about people who are really really dumb.
"Diner," Barry Levinson
It captures that feeling of hanging out with your friends in your early 20s better than any movie I've ever seen. There are so many quotable lines, it's funny and slightly heartbreaking, with an amazing soundtrack. I've probably seen this movie 25 times.
"Flirting With Disaster," David O. Russell
David O Russell is probably my favorite filmmaker. He's not only a great director, but he's also a great writer. I can never tell where his movies are going to go, and this movie is one of his best. It's about a guy's search for his identity and the strange, strange places it takes him. Richard Jenkins and Josh Brolin as police officers who are also life partners is genius.
Disney/Pixar's "Up," Pete Docter, Bob Peterson
How did they even think of this idea? An old man ties balloons to his house and befriends a boy scout? It's one of the funniest, most beautiful, heartfelt movies I've ever seen. I sat in the theater in awe.
