2013 was an amazing year for movies. From the jaw-dropping, revolutionary spectacle of sci-fi blockbuster "Gravity" to Chiwetel Ejiofor heartrending breakout performance in the exemplary historical drama "12 Years a Slave," this year's best films are a mishmash of genre, style, and innovation.
Disney's late-year releases, "Frozen" and "Saving Mr. Banks," earned acclaim for very different reasons -- the former signaling the studio's return to animation excellence, and the latter showcasing the first and only big-screen depiction of Walt Disney. Filmmaker Spike Jonze returned in spectacular fashion with his sci-fi drama "Her," in which Scarlett Johansson's voice could earn her an Oscar nom. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio teamed up again for the highly praised comedy-drama-biopic "The Wolf of Wall Street," and awards season regulars the Coen Brothers served up their latest offering: "Inside Llewyn Davis," a fictionalized, music-infused account of a talented musician struggling to stand out in the '60s Greenwich Village folk scene. And who could forget Katniss Everdeen's triumphant return in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"? The sequel has handily surpassed the original in critical praise, with Jennifer Lawrence getting even more attention (is that even possible?!) the second time around.
And let's not forget this year's earlier standout movies and performances. The explosively fun "Iron Man 3" was a hit with audiences and critics, Cate Blanchett's tour de force performance in Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine" still has people talking, and the colossal animated hit "Despicable Me 2" had families returning to theaters over and over again just to get another glimpse of those adorably hilarious minions.
