Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow character has become more well-rounded since she was introduced in the first "Avengers" film in 2012, starring in this year's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." But according to co-star Robert Downey Jr., Johansson deserves a movie all to herself.
In an interview with USA Today, Downey joined a seemingly endless list of people who have wondered why Black Widow hasn't secured her own movie yet, adding that he thinks his fellow Avenger is more than capable of leading her own franchise. Discussing the pivotal roles that female characters have played in Marvel films (including his "Iron Man" co-star Gwyneth Paltrow and "Guardians of the Galaxy" star Zoe Saldana), Downey said that it was time for Johansson to get her due, too.
"Doesn't Scarlett deserve a break?" Downey said. " ... [I]t would be kind of more appropriate for a character that already was like a Black Widow [to lead a movie]. It just seems like whatever Scarlett does people want to go see it."
And Downey's praise for co-stars didn't stop with Johansson. The actor also called out two of his other "Avengers" castmates' characters as ripe for their own standalone flicks.
"The funny thing is honestly at this point everyone deserves a franchise," he told USA Today. "I think Jeremy Renner is - when folks see the 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' he's just a rock star, a badass. And Ruffalo is pumped. He does great [work]. I'd like to hear them talk even more seriously about a Hulk franchise, because that's been one of the toughest ones to get right. But I'm sure that my parent company is feeling expansive and and bold after the summer they've had."
Fingers crossed that Downey gets his wish. In the meantime, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the Hulk are due on screen next in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," out on May 1, 2015.
